Meteorological Office, Wellington, Thursday, May 30, 4 p.ni. General Situation. —An extensive westerly depression covers the Tasman and New Zealand. Forecast.—Winds; North-westerly, backing to westerly, and in places south-westerly, moderate to strong generally, and of gale force in places south of New Plymouth and Castlepoint. Seas (New Zealand waters): High south of Cape Egmout, elsewhere rather rough to rough. Eastern Tasman Sea: Strong winds between’ north-west and south-west, with rough to high seas. Weather: Changeable and squally, with rain at times in most districts, and some heavy falls in the western and southern portions of the South Island. Temperatures becoming cooler. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 24 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, 2 hours 30 minutes. Rainfall, .06 inches. Shade temperature: Maximum. 68 deg. Fahr.; minimum, 58 deg. Fahr. Phases of the Moon for May: 'New moon, May 3; first quarter, May 10; full moon, May 18; last quarter, May 25.
