CYCLING

1 (Dj)

" VELOS.")

The couiiucneement of activities un the pan ut the Wanganui Amateur lloatl Cycling Club next Saturday should be marked by a good muster ui riders, ihis is the best way to ensure a sncccs-dui season, for a good start is half the battle. Llic club executive intend catering more generously lor the riders during tiie new season. Races will be held each week, commencing over a distance of ten miles and incietising as l-ne season progresses. Another important decision arrived at by the committee is the conducting of junior races. These events arc open to boys 16 years and under, lhey will be held on alternate weeks over a distance of live miles. Why these boys’ events have not been held before must remain a puzzle for most enthusiasts. It is to the youngsters that the cycling (dubs must look lor their recruits. the seniors cannot last lor ever. Besides, the youngsters have thus an opportunity to try themselves out against the more experienced riders, from whom they may obtain valuable advice. It will nut be necessary lor the boys lo have proper racing machines al this early stage of the season. That can wait till they find out how they are going to shape. It is hoped that there will be a good crowd in the first event next {Saturday* A very keen supporters of the cluli has kindly donated a cup for lfoe winners of the first, junior race. Most of the seniors are very keen tc get in’to action. A number of t.iiem are in earnest training, and with the extra races this season they should compete with a measure of success against open company in the big races inter in the year. In the absence of J. H. Wade, whois spelling after a strenuous track season, time honours will be keenly contested by at least four or five riders. G. Constantine should perforin well after a spell during the summer, but he will meet hard oppositic-n from Les. Anderson, who will be a greatly improved rider from last year. Les. has developed a useful sprint which will worry the boys at the businessend of the races. Waddy Pidwell is another who is going to- take some watching again this year. He is always willing to do his bit and is deserving of better luck. Waddy’s successes are always popular and last year he was the most consistent rider in the club. Ray. Orlowski should also be capable of some good performances as he packs a hardy kick but he would be well advised not to ride his motorbike too much as it does not tend to improve cycle riding ability. It is believed that Bert Hansen, the well-known track rider, intends stepping out on the road this seasonIf he does he will be a great asset to the club as well as st l engthening the scratch mark and if he strikes form the opposition will appreciate it. Of the others it is hard as yet to predict just who- will be prominent, as new riders and riders who have been Gut of the game for a year or so will take some reckoning, especially over the short distances. J. H. Wade, who performed particularly well during last track season, made a successful trip to the South Island over Faster, when he competed at two meetings, winning three races and having two seconds and two thirds in eleven starts. Jack speaks highly of the hospitality he received and the way his successes were acknowledged by the Press in Christchurch. Congratulations must be extended to Tom Pidwell, who has again been appointed to the position of club captain, which office he so capably filled last, season. It is hoped that the boys will give him all the assistance lhey can.
