SIR A. MACKENZIE. LONDON, April 28. The death is announced of fclir Alexander Mackenzie, musician. He was conductor of Novello’s oratorio concerts, and later was conductor of the Philharmonic Society, and succeeded Sir G. Macfarren as principal of the Royal 1 Academy of Music, winch position he | held from JBBB till 19224, when he rep,, L LORD GLADSTONE. LONDON, April 28. The death is announced of Lord Gladstone, aged 83, the third son of the late Kt. Hou. W. E. Gladstone. Lord Gladstone was senior partner of Ogilvy, Gillanders and Co., Liverpool and London, and Gillanders, Arbuthnot and Co., Calcutta; director of the P. and O. Company, and other concerns. He was in Calcutta mostly from 1874 to 1879. He acted for some time as private secretary to his father. He was a member of the Treasury Committee on National Guarantee for War Risks for Shipping < 1906-8) and of the Committee on Irish Financial Relations (1911); also of the Royal Commission on Indian Finance and Currency (1913). He was LordLieutenant of Flintshire and president of the Territoilal Army Association in 1915; alderman, Flintshire County Council and president of the County Committee of the British Legion, Scout Council, and Flintshire League *of Nations Council: treasurer of the National Library of Wales; president of the Uni versity College of North Wales. The death occurred on Saturday of Mr. John Buchanan Grant, ex-headmas-ter of the Hataitai and Karori Schools, and a well known resident of Karori, where he took an active part in bowling and church affairs.
