UTIKU GOLF CLUB A committee meeting of the above club was hold on Frida > evening, when the president (Mr W. Prime) occupied the fhair. Also present were: Messrs S. Reid, D. Pilcher, J. Belk, P. Pragnell, R. K. Gordon, I. P. Parkes, C. H. Transom, and the secretary (Mr 11. E. A. Richards). It was decided that the Smith Cup competition should consist of three rounds, the first round to be played in May, the second in June, and the third in July, on a day fixed bv the committee. The draw for this competition will be arranged by the match committee, and players must play according to the draw. Any scorers that maybe necessary will be arranged bv the snatch committee. It was resolved that in future, committee meetings bo held on the second Friday in each month, at 7.30 p.m. The committee decided to make an addition to the club house building, and also to extend the verandah. The following new members were elected: Mrs H. Marsh, Misses Marsh and H. Transom. Messrs H. Hayman and R.. Gordon (Taoroa). The following local rules were made: (1) Any player may if he wishes, play another tec shot, only if his ball strikes the fence going up No. 4 fairway. (2) Where earth has become exposed on fairway by sheep rolling, a player may pick out and drop without penalty. REGENT THEATRE Considered by far the most entertaining of the entire series of “Chan” thrillers, “Charlie Chan in London” will make its appearance on the svreen of the Regent Theatre on Tuesday. Warner Oland, whose name has become synonymous with the character of Charlie throughout tho series, again portrays the role of the bland Chinese detective. In his latest adventure, Charlie Chan invades Shcrluck Holmes’ realm, and journeys to London to solve.the most amazing mystery of his remarkable career in criminology. A man is doomed to hang for murder. His sister believes n’.nj innocent. She pleads with Chan to take the case and try to find the real murderer and exonerate her brother. With only sixty-five hours remaining before, the innocent man must meet his death Chan get to work. He finds he is working against time and a murderer who has the cunning of a fox. "With only eight hours remaining in wbivh to solve tho mystery, Chan lays a clever trap, and snares his human fox without the aid of hounds or horse. Drue Leyton, who will be recalled as the feminine lead in “Charlie Chan’s Courage,’> again portrays the role of the romantic lead opposite Ray Milland. Others in the cast assembled for this production arc Mona Barrie, Alan Mowbray, Murray Kinnell, Douglas" Walton, Walter Johnson. E. E. Clive, George Barrand, Madge Bellamy, David Torrence. John Rogers, Paul England. Elsa Buchanan and Perry Ivins. John Stone produced the film, which was directed by Eugene Forde from the original screen play by Philip MacDonaald. PERSONAL The friends of Mr and Mrs S. Powell will regret to learn of the death of their elder son, Melville, which occurred at Arapuni on Saturday, at the age of 32 years. It appears that Mr “Mel” Powell, as he was popularly known, was playing football when he suddenly collapsed and was carried off

the field in a stretcher. Death occurred soon afterwards. It is believed that heart failure was the cause of death. Deceased was on the engineering staff at Arapuni and was a very popular young man. He was educated at the Taihape District High School and news of his sudden death comes as a great shock to many in Taihape, and deep and sincere sympathy will be extended to his bereaved parents. The funeral will be held at Taihape to-day (Tuesday), at 2 p.m.
