~ POWERS ARE TO CONFER j MEETING TO BE HELD IN MAY ' I AUSTRIA’S INDEPENDENCE VITAL , [By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) ' Received April 14, 8.40 p.m. LONDON, April 14. ; The Sunday Times’ Stresa correspondent says that the main feature of to-day’s work was a decision tu call a Danubian Conference on May 20 to deal primarily with the question of Austrian independence. The Confer- ' ence will be convened by Italy and 1 the Powers invited will be Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Rumania, Jugoslavia as secession States, Germany and Poland as interested panics, , Fraii’ce as a signatory to the Rome : Agreement, and England and Switzer- - i land as observers. It is understood that the discussions i will be divided into two parts —firstly, the preservation of Austrian independ- ’ ence, which means guarantees of noninterference by other Powers, and, | secondly, the conclusion of serious non-aggression Pacts among Danubian ; countries. It is understood that it was decided j to prepare a draft of the proposed Eastern Pact of Non-Aggression for submission to Germany, Russia and Poland. It was decided that the ques- ’ tion of rearmament of Austria, Hungary and Bulgaria be postponed for the latter conference. Signor Mussolini stressed the importance of having an independent Austria, on the ground that if this brick in the wall was allowed to crumble, others would drop. There was complete unanimity on this subject , amon" the three Governments.
