WORK "OF THE MONTH. COUNCIL MEETING ON FRIDAY. The monthly meeting of the Wanga- . nui County Council was held on Friday. R. L. Mackintosh presided, and also in attendance were Crs. D. McGregor, W. Craig, J. J. Lissettc, A. Todd, Rice, Mitchell and Collins. On Monday, Al ay (5, the day recommended by the. Government for jubilee celebrations all employees of the council will be granted a holiday on full pay. It- was decided to close on the offer of the Railway Department for proper construction of a cattle stop near Fordell, thus providing the settlers with better access to their properties. The council agreed to pay £52, the cost of the work. Engineer’s Report. The engineer reported:—Mangawhero Riding.—A new grit pit has been opened on the No. 48 Highway near the 39-mile peg from which grit is being obtained to surface the highway north of 32 miles. Maintenance metal a is also being obtained from Makirikiri ‘ pit lor repairing the lower end of this , road. The final re shaping work, in ' connection with two miles of recons struction is being carried out and if ■ weather conditions permit, one seal - coat of tar will be applied within the next few weeks. The decking on the i Aberfeldie bridge is in an indifferent ' state of repair and longitudinal wheel ’ planks will be placed for the full i length of the bridge. > A concrete culvert will be placed on the Kaiwhaiki Road where a large ■ timber rfulvert has partly collapsed. . Road widening work is being carried i out by relief workers on the Wanganui .* River Road. Mangamahu Riding.—Grit io the extent of 400 cubic yards lias been sup- ■ plied for the maintenance of the upper i end of the Wangaehu Valley Road, i Extra labour is being eniployed for ■ clearing slips on this road between Koui koupo stream and Pungataua. The tunnel and filling on the No. 50 highway near the 35 miles has been com- ; pletcd. Work has been commenced in connection with the construction or a • large culvert and lilling near the 35 miles. ■ I’urua Riding.—Reconstruction work . is in progress n the No. 50 highway and material fur filling is being ob- ■ tained by widening corners on the Okoia Road. The work will be completed by the end of this month. River shingle is being obtained from Wangaehu for surfacing this highway between Warrengate Road and Howie’s Hill. Metal maintenance repairs are being made between Fordell and LYie riii * g boundary. Road widening work is being done on Sutherland’s Hill and it is proposed to improve the alignment ! and grade at. the very acute corner ncai the top of Reid’s Hill. A culvert nmi i Cranstone’ which is of concrete wiki bp extended six feet at each end. Kaitoke Riding.—The No. 1 Line is in good condition throughout and tin 1 Putiki drains ar c now being cleared prior to the winter conditions. Light metal repairs are necessary on several side roads, which work will be effected at an early date. Kaukatea J?iding.—The approaches to the new bridge at Okoia have been completed and the deviation is now open to traffic. A small bridge on the Waikoupa Road has been replaced by twin concrete pipes and filling. Morikau Riding.— A washout on the Wanganui River Road near the Raupirau Bridge has been repaired.
