Following the High Court’s decision against the Commonwealth in the Grif- • fin case amending immigration legislation has been introduced in the Senate. Senator Brennan said that it was well known that up to a few yea s ago there were powerful organisations engaged in smuggling aliens into Ausi tralia. The object of the Bill is to . plug the loopholes in the existing legislation revealed by Griflin’s successful appeal. Air. Brennan said that the Bill would throw upon an accused person the onus of proving that he was not a prohibited immigrant. .It was not aimed at Griffin, but would apply particularly io Asiatics smuggled ashore, many of them at our Northern gate. If Griffin behaved himself no 1 further action would be taken.
