S.S. GALE SAILS
WELL-KNOWN COASTER. LAST \ J.SIT TO WANGANUI. In the early hours of yesterday mornin<r the coastal steamer Gale swung slowly away from the Town Wharf and shortly before the chimes of one o'clock sounded over the sleeping city, the well-known coaster steamed down the river for the last time. ’When she cleared the bar half an hour or so later her 14 years of regular trading to the port came to an end. The Gale has been sold by the Canterbury Steam Shipping Company to a firm of Australian shipowners and will proceed from Lvttelton next week to Port Fairy, her new home port on the Victorian coast. Arriving from Picton early on Tuesday morning, the steamer brought general cargo from southern ports. She sailed for Wellington with a cargo of wool and from Wellington will proceed to Lvttelton where she will be taken over by a crew from Australia. The master who will be in charge for the trip across the Tasman arrived at Lyttelton with his officers and engineers some days ago. M hen she enters her new running for the Belfast and Karoit Steam Navigation Company, the Gale will be renamed Wannon. She is expected to enter the Australian coastal trade early in June.
