THE PARAPARA ROAD
|T IS to be hoped that when the Wanganui County Council meets on Friday finality will be reached in the important proposals made by the Highways Board in regard to the improvement of the Wanganui-Raetihi Main Highway, better known as the Parapara Road. It is of vital importance to the city that that route should be brought up to standard. All aspects of the matter require careful thought, however, and particular care has been taken to see that county ratepayers are not unduly penalised for the reconstructing of a road made necessary, not so much because of their needs as the needs of national traffic and rhe city. An amicable arrangement is quite possible in this matter, and the attitude of the City Council in agreeing to forego its elSim on the county for upkeep of the Town Bridge is surely indicative of a genuine stand for the good of Vi anganui as a whole. The County Council, on the other hand, is just as capable of taking the broad view which far outshines the narrowness of parochialism. It would not leave a happy thought weie it to be remembered that the county failed to avail itself of foreign capital to the exlent of £8 for £1 and, at the same time, liad a chance to be free once and for all of the bugbear of the Town Bridge.
