THE WANGANUI SALE SHEEP PRICES FIRM. Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., report as follows on yesterday’s Wanganui sale:—We had a good entry of cattle, slightly in excess of 500 head, over which we report a dragging sale, a fair proportion being passed at auction, but a good many lots were sold privately after the sale. The sheep yarding was not as heavy as in the past, and being between seasons now yardings will not be as heavy for a while, but will be confined more to fat sheep. Prices were firm at late rates. A good entry of pigs sold well. Following are prices realised:— Sheep.—Fat wethers, 225; prime ewes, 15s 5(1, 16s 10d; light fat ewes, 13s sd, 14s; prime lambs, to 235; liggliter, 16s 2d, 18s; small two-tooth ewes, 21s 6d; ditto, wethers, 17s; four and five-year ewes to ’Down rams, 18s 6d; wether lambs, to 13s lOd; b.f. lambs, 9s 6d, 12s Id. Cattle.—Fat Jersey bullocks, £5 17s (id, £6; prime ex dairy cows, £3 10s, £4; fat ditto, £2, £3 ss; fat heifers, £3 12s 6d, £4 2s (id; forward P. A. bullocks, £.5 12s 6d, £6 ss; four-year bullocks, £4 12s 6d, £4 19s; 20-month P.A. steers, £3 10s. £3 14s; 2A-year Hereford heifers, £3 10s, £3 12s 6d; P.A. weaners, steers, £2 4s 6d; good works cows, 255, 355; boner cows, 12s, 17s 6d; heavy bulls, £2 15s, £3. J CHRISTCHURCH, April 10. There was a good sale of store and fat sheep and fat lambs at Addington to-day. Store Lambs.—A good demand for . ewe lambs, which made to 19s 3d. Wether lambs sold at unchanged values. Store Sheep.—A smaller entry but still larger than usual at this time of the year. A keen sale for all classes of ewes, particularly the better sorts. Extra good 2-th. made to 31s, ordinary 1 2-th 22s to 24s 6d, medium 2-th Rom- t ney ewes to 265; extra good 4-yr half- c bred to 23s 2d; ordinary to medium 4-yr 18s to 20s; good s.rn. Romney " cross to 18s 9d; f.m. 8s to 12s. j Fat Lambs.—2soo were penned. All export buyers were operating and 6|d a lb was realised for firsts. Fat Sheep.—4ooo were penned and there was a general improvemnt up to a shilling a head, with a good export f dmand for light ewes. Extra prime heavy wethers made to 35s lOd, prime heavy 26s 6d to 28s 6d, prime medium . weight 21s to 265, ordinary 19s to 23s (id, extra prime ewes 26s Id, prime heavy 20s to 245, prime medium weight 16s 6d to 19s 6d ,ordinary 10s to 16s. 16s 6d to 19s 6d, ordinary 10s to His. creased values ruled at the commencement of the sale for good steers on account of the scarcity but they weakened to lasU week’s values over the ( final stages. The average advance for good steers was 15s. Other classes were unchanged. Best beef made 23s (id tc* 25s per 1001 b, good 20s to 22s 6d; good heifer 19s to 22s best cow 18s to I 20s (id; medium steers 15s to 17s, inferior 14s to 15s 6d and rough down to 11s. Extra prime heavy steers made to £l2 2s 6d, prime heavy £8 15s to ( £lO ss, prime medium weight £7 15s to £9; ordinary £4 10s to £6 10s; extra, prime heifers to £9 7s 6d; prime £4 10s to £6 10s, ordinary £3 5s to £4 ss, extra prime cows to £8 7s (id; prime I £4 to £6, ordinary £2 10s to £3 10s. Fat f’igs. —A mixed entry with a good sale for porkers, Baconers were easier. Choppers made 37s 6d to £4 (is, baconers 45s to £3 10s 6d, average price t per lb 5d to 51d; porkers 28s to £2 Ils 6d, average per lb 5Jd to Old. ] THE WESTFIELD SALE RECENT LEVELS MAINTAINED t SPIRITED BIDDING FOR PIGS I ( Per Press Association. ) AUCKLAND, April 10. Competition was again good for all but plain cattle at the Westfield fat stock sale to-day and recent price levels were easily maintained. The yarding of ox beef was well up to the average, comprising 200 steers, while 600 cows and heifers represented the J largest yarding for sometime. In both classes there were a number of exceptionally good lines. Ox beef and good j quality cows and heifers were very firm at late rates. Inferior and plain sorts were hard to quit, the sale dragging noticeably when rough lines were J offered. Extra choice ox beef sold to 24s per 1001 b, choice and prime 21s to 235, secondary and plain 17s to 19s, prime young cow and heifer beef 20s to 235, other cow beef 12s to 19s. Extra heavy prime steers made £.lO 5s to £ll ss, heavy prime £8 15s to £9 17s 6d, lighter prime £7 10s to £8 12s 6d, light prime £6 to £7 7s 6d, small and unfinished £4 to £5 15s, extra prime young cows and heifers £6 10s to £7 10s, ( heavy prime £5 to £6 7s 6d, lighter j prime £3 10s to £4 17s 6d, other kill- ( able cows £1 10s to £3 7s 6d. < A full yarding of calves included a ■ lair proportion of good quality heavy vealers, for which the demand remained unchanged, late rates ruling. All j others eased about 2s a head, though there were some improvements in the j late sales. Runners made 30s to 80s, a vealers 14s to 525. Both sheep and lamb sales were con- 1 ducted in very heavy rain. Fat r ‘ wethers and ewes were penned in fewer numbers than usual. The qual- ’ ity being well up to the average. There was a ready demand throughout with J prices firm at late rates. Lambs were ] also in full supply and sold well at , current values. Wethers, prime, made ( 20s to 28s, unfinished 18s to 19s 6d; ewes, prime, 16s to 21s 6d, unfinished 7s to 15s 6d; lambs, prime, 17s to 22s 6d, unfinished 10s to 16s 6d. The yarding of fat pigs was an average one with a plentiful supply of wellfinished baconers. Competition was more spirited than it had been for some time and a very firm market re-
suited. Some extra heavy baconers realised to 755. Store pigs showed slight improvement with a better demand. Baconers made 48s to 735, porkers 28s to 435, large stores 15s to 20s. Prices per lb were: Baconers and porkers 5d to s£d.
