WOOL MARKETS

THE WELLINGTON SALE The New Zealand Farmers’ Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., report on th« Wellington sale as follows:—The fourth sale of the 1934-35 season was held on Thursday, when a catalogue of approximately 21,000 bales was offered (oi which we contributed 4007), to a fully representative bench of buyers. Our catalogue was a good Bradford selection with the exception of a few outstanding clips, notably BMcL/Totaranui, Hare, Lockwood, WGP and R in Circle. The market at to-day’s sale was generally very animated and showed considerable briskness so far as bidding was concerned. The prices realised can 150 considered very satisfactory from the growers’ point of view as recent reports of sales in London, compared with to-day’s realisations, must be quoted as decidedly in sellers’ favour here. Bradford was again the largest operator whose chief competitors were France and Russia, their competition being responsible for sustaining prices and making the sale a much better one than was anticipated over the last fewdays. America, Canada and Japan were in the market for wools suitable for their requirements, Germany buying very little. Hoggets showing quality and style were .in good demand and can be quoted up to Id dearer than last Wellington sale, while other sorts were firm. Ewes and wethers, particularly those showing style and quality, can be quoted at id to Id dearer. Lambs' wool was very erratic nd the competition for this class of wool was very limited, the local mills taking the best lines at prices from id cheaper than last sle, whilst fulty lines, those off colour nd showing seed were difficult of sale and fair proportion of these were passed in and can be quoted generally at id to lid cheaper. Pieces came in for some very good competition, good bulky lines showing quality being from id dearer and were taken by the Continent and the local mills, whilst average lines were very firm, very few lots failing to reach valuations. Bellies were in good demand, the bulk of which went to the Continent and local scourers and were firm on last sale. Good average and best erutchings were in good demand and as compared with ffeece, realised very satisfactory prices, as high as 6d being paid for super lots. Good average lines can be quoted at 4£d to inferior lots at Sid to 4id per pound- Our principal realisations were as follows: WGP: AE 7id, BE 7d, CE 6d, first pieces 4|d. CMC: H 7d, E s'Jd. Murray, Roberts and Co., Ltd., report: The fourth of ths Wellington series of wool sales took place on Thursday, combined catalogues totalling some 22,000 bales, being submitted to a full attendance of buyers; our catalogue consisting of 3001 bales — mainly average top making wools, with a few hues of better-class crossbreds in evidence. Competition was very keen and fairly well spread, more especially on wools showing fine quality demand, and for such wools the prices realised were fully up to last month’s level, with average crossbreds showing occasionally a decline of a farthing. Pieces and bellies were about a halfpenny lower than February and lambs' wool was decidedly irregular, with values up to a penny lower, more especially in the better grade lambs. Bradford bought consistently and Continental buyers were bidding well on all lots suitable, France being active for the best lines of skirtings, finest crossbreds and halfbreds. Amongst our binned wools under “Pipitea” brand we offered some nice lots, which came under the keenest competition, one lot c-f super Down bringing 124 d.
