Austin, manager of the Elder'slie stud, who returned from Australia by the Maunganui to-day says the New Zealand Government had to reaUse that it was killing the goose that laid the golden egg. •‘The present system under _ wtaeh racing operates in New Zealand is driving good horses out of the country. Australian buyers are prepared to give a fair price for any good New Zealand horse. Racing is on a firm basis in Victoria largely because of the bookmakers. It is an easy matter for an owner to place £2OO or £3OO on his horse without shortening the price: a crreat deal. If the horse is good the betting gives the owner a chance -o make expenses,” said Mr. Austin. Until bookmakers were registered m New Zealand and a tax on their turnover was diverted to the racing club s revenue he could not see much hope of competing with Australia. HAWERA CANDIDATES AGA KHAN’S SMOOTH GALLOP HAWERA, March, 20. Fine overhead conditions prevailed at the Hawera racecourse yesterday morning, when the preparations of the Hawera horses for the Manawatu meeting was advanced. The trial grass was used being on the slow side after heavy showers. The best comparative gallop was performed by Aga Khan, who travelled very smoothly. At Awapuni last year at the March meeting Aga Khan won the Tamatete Handicap, carrying 8.4, and running the mile and a-quarter in 2.6, and as he is in great racing trim he is entitled to consideralle respect in his engagements. •Golden Hair has not come on as quickly as expected and trainer Cox has decided not to race her this week.. Probably Easter time will see her returning to something like her old form. Arouse and Carfex were given useful working gallops. March Alone, who was schooled yesterday, giving a good display over five fences, did strong pace work over a couple of rounds, running home the last half-mile in 565. Aga Khan (Cole), commencing at the six furlongs, went evenly throughout, his first half-mile occupying 525. and rhe six furlongs being completed in 1.18. Golden Hair was restricted to slow work on the sand track. Harvest Moon (Cole) went away smartly from the five furlongs peg to register 37is. for his first three furlongs and 1.4 1-5 for the full journey. Members of J. Fryer’s team for AwaPuni, Panloff, Onewhetu, Puroto and Ruri, did fast work on Monday and this morning were relegated to steady pace exercise. * St. Clara (Cook) travelled smoothly over half a mile in 525. Topthorn, Haunui, Friesland and Copey were given useful pa*ce work. Autumn Leaf (Mills) and the Acre — Rapt youngster sprinted three furlongs, finishing together in 395. Diagano (Cole) went rather lazily in his effort over six furlongs, the jounrey occupying 1.20. Cynical Kid did useful pace work on the inside and Passing Fancy finished her work by running home from the three-furlong post comfortably in 4245.
