PREVENTION OF FIRE
INSPECTION OF PREMISES PUBLICITY IN WANGANUI. A further inspection of business premises in Wanganui was carried out yesterday by City Council inspectors and the Fire Brigade foreman in continuation of the "Fire Prevention Week” campaign. Referring to the inspection, the superintendent of the Wanganui Central Fire Brigade stated that he was very pleased at the readiness of all business men to listen to suggestions for the safety of the premises, while the absence of an accumulation of litter and rubbish was a commendable feature of Wanganui shops and warehouses. "I would like to suggest,” said the superintendent, "that care should be exercised when a gas-ring is used for the purpose, of preparing morning or afternoon tea for employees Sometimes we have found that the ring is placed on a sheet of tin or asbestos resting directly on a bench or table. The heat, it is found, penetrates with surprising results and the practice is too dangerous to be lightly regarded. If the tin plate is raised to permit of the free circulation of air underneath a source of potential fire danger is removed. Two ordinary bricks would suffice, or possibly four empty jam tins would raise the gas-ring to the required height,” Concluded the superintendent. This afternoon one of the Fire Brigade’s Dennis tenders will parade Victoria Avenue fully manned, with several striking slogans on banners decorating its sides. The whole fleet from the main station, together with the Castlecliff engine, will form a procession through the business area on Friday night.
