CYCLING

WEST COAST TITI.ES championship contests. TOMORROW NIGHT’S MEETING. The West Coast cycling cliampionship meeting to be held on Cook’s Gardens to-morrow evening promises something new in cycle racing, for all championship events will be decided under Empire Games conditions. This deci sion was arrived at by t,he newly I formed N.Z. Cycling Association mainly with the object of giving riders who travel overseas some experience in thi slype of racing. 'l’lic events to be run include the 1000 metres, with not more than three in heats. This race should require four to six heats, two semi-finals and a final. This event is almost identical witih the match racing so popular in Europe. The next race, the .1000 metre time trial, is quite distinct, as each contestant rides unpaced against the clock. This is a trial of stamina and pace. The junior championship, to be com peted for by riders under 1.8 years, will be over the half-mile distance. The West Coast has several very promising juniors, notably J. C. Bourke (who surprised J. Wade and Co. on Saturday) and also Esau, of Palmerston, the New Zealand junior road champion. It should be a great battle between these two.

i The ten mile championship should h< worth going a long way to see. Ther< ’ tvill be no chance of the riders just ‘ crawling along as this event will ho ' paced by a tandem and the pace will be on the whole distance, with riders 1 like Lawrence and Walker of Palmerton. Lade, of Fcilding, Ellery and Sanders, Marton. Hawkins, New Plymouth, as well as the local riders, Wade ap<l Hanson, to name just a few of the more prominent starters. The winner should I take a lot of picking. ! The usual athletic events will take place in conjunction with the cycling i events, a large number of entries hav | ing been received.
