Graso Fire. lhe Wanganui Central Fire Brigade was called out last evening to a grass fire in London Street, near Smithfield Road, where some grass and lupin were burning freely. The flames were extinguished u y a single lead and no damage resulted. It is the 62iinion of the brigade that a lighted cigarette butt was the cause of the fire. Outbreak of Fire.

A minor outbreak of fire in some paper beside the incinerator-boiler at the Herald printing office yesterday afternoon caused a call to be registered at the Wanganui Central Fire Brigade station through the automatic alarm, lhe staff had the flames under control when the brigade arrived, the damage being confined to a broken window and charred sashes.

Aero Chib Rally A combined rally of the Western federated (North Island) Aero Club will be held at Wanganui on April 6. At a meeting of the Wanganui Aero Cub last night it was decided to leave all arrangements in the hands of a committee consisting of Messrs. E. J. Strachan, J. g. Harrison, E. H.Varvie and D. Lethbridge. It was also resolved to invite members of the Marton Aero Club to participate in the rally.

Cargo of Steel Girders An uuusual visitor to the port of Wanganui was the Union Company’s freighter Kini, which arrived at Castlecliff from Greymouth on Friday. The vessel brought 140 tons of steel girders consigned to the Railway Department and after discharge sailed on Saturday morning for Wellington. The Kini is a steamer of 1388 tons and has called at Wanganui on previous occasions. She is due to leave Wellington to-day for Sydney and after arrival at the New South Wales port will enter the company’s Tasmanian cargo service. Confidence in Clerk

The Waitotara County Council at its meeting yesterday, on the motion of the chairman, Mr AV. Morrison, seconded by Cr. Goldsbury, unanimously passed the following resolution: “That the council desires to place on record its appreciation of the loyal services rendered to it by Mr T. Dix, both as engineer and clerk and to express its continued confidence in him.” The •council also expressed the opinion that in the recent Court proceedings the imputations against Mr Dix’s ability and integrity were entirely groundless and unjustifiable.

Trunk Air Services A letter was read at yesterday’s meeting of the Waitc-tara County Council from the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce protesting against the issue of a licence for a trunk air service to operate from Palmerston North to Dunedin. The chamber held that such service should extend to Auckland and include the major centres en route. The council tacitly signified its support to the chamber’s action by appointing Mr. W. Morrison (chairman) to represent it in conjunction with the chamber and Wanganui City Council, when the matter is discussed before the Transport Co-ordination Board. A Dangerous Practice

Wanganui pilots are still being caused considerable concern by the actions of careless people walking across the aerodrome. It is a dangerous practice that, if not checked, may lead to a serious accident. One pilot reported at last night’s meeting of the Wanganui Aero Club that while coming down from 2000 ft. on Bunday he noticed four people on the aerodrome and in such a position that he could not land. It was pointed out at the meeting that the practice is continuing in spite of repeated warnings, and that the club will have no option but to prosecute if there is any more trouble in this direction.

Mangatiti Punt As the result of the recent, heavy flood in lhe Wanganui River, the Mangatiti punt, 20 miles above Pipiriki, has baen washed away, and Mr. J. P. Ward has written to the Waitotara County Council stressing the hardship inflicted on settlers as the result of them being deprived of access to their properties. Mr. Ward stated that there were 11 European settlers and 40 Maoris in the locality who were isolated. It had been impossible to save lhe punt owing to the swift volume of water and it had been sweft out to sea. If the county would assist in the provision of a light suspension bridge the settlers would be prepared to find £3O per annum in special rates. The chairof the council .(Mr. W. Morrison), said that w'hile the county appreciated the difficulty facing the settlers, it W'as not responsible for the punt. Cr. L. T. Jones said that the Government would not consider the erection of overhead bridges while there were punts in existence. In this instance lhe punt had been lost and it was imperative that something should be done. It was decided to bring the matter before the Public Works Department. It was agreed also to add the cost of the proposed bridge to the county’s road estimates w'hich it intended to place before the department.
