BURNED TO DEATH
THREE HORSES IN STABLE TRAINER’S HEAVY LOSS. [ Per Press Association J AUCKLAND, March 10. Three young thoroughbred racing horses, valued at about £lOOO, were burned to death when the racing stables of Cuthbert Morse, trainer, of Takanini, were destroyed by fire late on Saturday night. The loss on the buildings, racing equipment and feed is estimated at £B5O. None of the loss is covered by insurance. The outbreak was discovered at about 10.30 p.m., when Morse’s son was roused from sleep by the sound of horses stamping and kicking in the stables and rushed outside to find the stables almost enveloped in flames. Three horses were in the loose boxes in the centre of the stables. Morse, jnr., and neighbours made repeated attempts to reach the horses but the doorway and walls of the building were enveloped in flames. When it was obvious that the animals were doomed, efforts were concentrated on saving the adjoining outbuildings and preventing the flames from reaching the house. A motor-car was saved from the garage adjoining the stables and a small one room at the back was also saved.
Morse, the owner, was at Te Rapa with two horses. He said he would lose heavily as none of the buildings or valuable racing equipment was insured.
One of the destroyed horses, the two-vear-old colt Springfield,.raced bv Miss H. Walker, of Auckland, had been entered to race at Paeroa next Saturday. It was valued at about £5OO. The other two horses were Bi mu Rose, a two-year-old filly owned by Mr S. Jackson, of Papakura, and a yearling fillv by Tea Tray out of Star Attraction, owned bv Mr J. Martin, of Remiiera.
