MOTOR RALLY

ELIMINATION TESTS SUCCESSFUL EVENT OVER ORGA N IS ERS CO MPIJME N T E D The steep gradient of Drew's Avenue formed an ideal spot for the elimination tests through which competing cars in the North Island Rally were put yesterday morning. This completed the rally and found the winners of the respective classes. On Saturday and Sunday, competitors were subjected to road-driving tests, which embraced travelling from given points to Napier on the first day and from Napier to Wanganui on the second. Yesterday the drivers were asked to show their skill in handling cars in an emergency or to extricate the vehicles from a narrow, defined area. The first was a starting test. Ihe second was to drive uphill, stop within six inches of a chalk mark and then back down again. The third was to drive over four potatoes (a very difficult task when tried) and the fourth to extricate a car from a given square without touching the sides. The square was marked with bottles and the drivers were asked to turn and handle the car without knocking a bottle over. Time was a factor in everything, of course. Marks were added or subtracted according to the skill of the drivers. At the end of these tests the points allotted for road work in travelling to and from Napier, were taken and the elimination marks added or subtracted, as the ‘case might be. Tn such fashion the association was able to determine the winners. RESULTS AT A GT.ANGE Class I A. J. Davison (Hamilton), (C. H. Davison and A. R. Davies), Pontiac, 278 points ........ 1 F. Competitors Entertained The competitors were the guests of the Carnival Committee at morning tea at the Elrick Lounge, where the prizes were presented. The Mayor (Mr N. G. Armstrong) welcomed the visitors to Wanganui and trusted that they would stay and see something of the city and enjoy the carnival. The rally had been of great assistance to the carnival and he paid tribute to the organisers and complimented the winners on their performances. Mr F. K. Turnbull, president of the Carnival Executive, presented the prizes. He endorsed the Mayor’s remarks. The speaker referred to ihe excellent w r ork of pr. H. D. Robertson, the chairman of the rally •committee, who was the originator of the idea, and that of Mr F. J. Hill, the secretary, upon whom had fallen the detail work. Mr Turnbull also referred to the great assistance rendered the rally by the patrols. Captain Forde (Napier), replying on behalf of the competitors, congratulated Wanganui on promoting the rally with such success. There were minor matters which could be attended to and could be rectified next year. There was not one of the competitors who did not enjoy the whole thing. (Applause). Mr Hill said that the work had certainly been heavy, but it was very interesting. The enjoyment the •competitors had obtained from the rally, and the success which had attended it were his satisfaction. Patrol L. Dowling replied on behalf of the respective patrols engaged.
