SCHOOL COMMITTEE 'The monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the Town Board rooms on Monday, February 4. Those present were: Messrs Boyne (chair man i. Elmslie, Wicks, Gardiner, Aiken and Bromiley. A discussion took place on tho aniiual school and dairymen's picnic, and it was unanimously decided to invite the tradespeople of the town io cooperate and help Ij make rhe picnic a bigger and brighter one. It was decided that the school committee should donate .£.7 to the funds, and with the sum of J 7s held in trust from last year, a cheque for £5 17s will be forwarded to the appointed secretary of the com bined picnic committee. The following lytter was received from the board, an 1 Messis Boyuu and Bromiley were appointed as the committee’s trustees to the fund: “I have to advise you that it is the intention of the department to provide by regulation lot profits earned in rhe school savings branch to be credited to school committees. Owing to the very short period during which the .scheme has been in operation and tb«v fact that expenses incurred in its in augu ration will be comparatively heavy, it is unlikely that any profits will be earned this year. In consequence of your school Having adopted ll|svheiiic, the Postmaster-General has approved of the payment to your com mittee of the sum of £2, towards your school library. If there is no such libra iy, or if it is at present well stocked with books, then the. money may bo used in encouragement of school sports during the forthcoming year. This payment is a special one 1 and must not be taken as an indication of your school’s proportion of the profits which may be received for tho year 1935. or thereafter. It is proposed to credit this amount to a special savings-bank account in the name of your committee at, the end of the school year so that I he sum may be withdrawn as required, and in this case the names of one or no re trustees should be, .>ubmil tod. This special account will not bo closed but w ill be used for the purpose of crediting thereto profits earned in the future years.’' SCHOOL PICNIC /x large meeting of tradesmen, dairymen arid members of the school tommitten was held in the hoard room on Monday night to form a committee to proceed with the combined picnic. Present: Messrs Boy.ie, Staite, Clover, E. Aiken, Bilton, A. Elmslie, F. Christiansen, W. Watkins, McKenzie, R. P. Palmer, Thomas, Beer, Dalrymple, Marriott, W Heginbotham, Wicks. Gardiner, Bromiley. Air Boyne was elected to the ehair. Air J. Middleton was appointed secretary, and Mr Bilton. treasurer. It war. decided that the be held on the racecourse on February 20. The following sub-committees were arranged: Air Flaherty and teachers to be in charge of the children’s sports programme; transport. Messrs Dallison, Bilton, G. Stewart and R. P. Palmer; adult sports and novelticn Messrs Clover, Marriott, Wicks and Beer; catering, Messrs A. Elmslie, E. Aiken. N. Bromiley; horse events, Messrs v. Southcombe, W. Heginbotham, IL Lap ton, J. Lupton, and F. Clris-enfeen; marshalls, Messrs AlcKenzie, C. Staite., and R. Bcyne. The tradesmen retired from the meeting to discuss the question of -closing their premises, and Air Beer announced to the meeting that the shops would close at 10.30 a.m., and that it was the intention of all radesmen present to donate 10s each to the picnic funds, it was expected that tradespeople not present would fall into line with these arrangements. The following were thanked for donations: Alcssrs J. L. Beer, Thomas, Dallison, Marriott, Heginbotham Bros., Broniileys, Ltd., R. P. Palmer, Fanners’ Co-op., Dalrymple, ALcKenzie’s Hotel, Ltd., 10s each; Airs AlcKenzie, Mi Thomas and Air Boer for additional trophies. The following tentative progiamm% was draw n up: School events 10.45 a.m till 12 noon; lunvh, 12 till 1 p.in.; ponv judging, 1 p.m. till 1.30 p-ui., to bt followed by the following progiatuiuc subject, to rearrangement and altera tions: —Horses: Trot, walk and gallop, apple leaping, needle threading, p<ny trot, ecckies’ derby, farmers’ trot, running leading horse, decorated pony and rider, jumping (open), pony jump. Running: Obstacle race, old girls’ race, obi boys’ race, married men’s race, married ladies’ race, tug-r.’-wm It was decided that al! cars park in the outside triangle and that a man be employed to regulate trafiiv. Milk, tea and sugar will be provided free The secretary was instructed to write the racing club ami Mr Wicks for Hie use of building and ground.
