LITTLE AMERICA SILENT BYRD'S MEN EMBARK [By Telegraph—Press Association -Copyright! Received Feb. (», 5.5 p.m. Aboard the Jacob Ruppert, Feb. 5. Little America has been evacuated and within 2-1 hours, unless mishaps occur, Admiral Byrd expects to give up the command of his second Antarctic expedition ami start the homeward sail. The past IS hours have been a period of feverish activity, as the Jongawaited break in the weather came on Sunday and the Jacob Ruppert was able to berth alongside the ice pack ami take aboard aeroplanes ami other heavy gear, liven with the Bay of Whales relatively calm, it was perilous work, and most of the men had been on their feet for two days without rest. Thu ’planes were brought to the Bay side, and by the use of poles an which the ’planes were dragged aboard the vessel. The lighter gear was swung aboard in cargo nets. Thu ex- | pcdition’s two cows and a bull were crated safely and embarked. The last to leave the group of buildings which twice have housed Admiral Byrd, was a small group under Mr. G. O. Novelle, one of Admiral Byrd’s staff officers. The farewell took place with a minimum of ceremony. Be said he cleaned up bis shack, left a brief note for possible visitors, and then closed the door and left. In the administration building the cooking fire was left burning and a few oddments of food and discarded clothing left untouched.
