THE TURF'

AT NEW PLYMOUTH TARANAKI J.C. MEETING CUP DAY TO-MORKOW (By “Kestrel’’) The majority of the horses which were seen out at the Wanganui meeting last week will be found competing at the Taranaki Jockey Club’s meeting at New Plymouth iv-niorrow and Saturday. Some newcomers are engaged, but in the main Wanganui form should prove a decent guide for followers of racing. The totalisator at the meeting will be operated on the win-and-place system, with a betting barometer instead of the usual totalisator face with its series of figures. The innovation found general favour when introduced at irentham, while it was also very popular at the Stratford and New Plymouth midsummer meetings. For the Taranaki Cup, to be decided to-morrow, nine figure on the card, though wnether they will all start remains to be seen, with the position of one or two candidates rather doubtful. Red Manfred heads the list with 9.4, which is 51b. more than he was allotted in the Flying Handicap. Perhaps his

connections may elect to take un the shorter race, after his Wanganui Cup defeat, but it must be remembered that the New Plymouth track has a better sole of grass than that experienced here last week. Aga Khan has 9.1 to

carry to-morrow, and in spite of his win in the Wanganui Cup, the task appears to be much more difficult tomorrow. Hazoor is down to make a reappearance after a let-up, so perhaps some of the horses with recent racing will be preferred. Cherry King has

raced very consistently this seasou, although a couple of first-day failures marred his record. He has been highly rated by the handicapper, and whether he can account for some of the lightweights remains to be proved- Pomp is the last of the Absurds and in spite of the fact that he has been shap ing well, others will be preferred W him. Lalla Quex may do better on her home track than at Ashhurst. It is to Person that the majority will look for an outstanding display sufficient to carry uff the honours of the 1935 Taranaki Cup. This imported three-year-old must be considered to have a wonderful chance with his light impost of 7.5. Included in his' successes since being brought over from Australia for the New Plymouth lady owner, Mrs. W. D. Graham, was the Stratford Cup, while he was accounted one of the unlucky runners in the Douro Cup at Trentham. His win iu the Victory Hack Handicap last Thursday was accomplished iu remarkably easy fashion, and he-was timed to cover a mile in better time than did Aga Khan in the Wanganui Cup. A

very high opinion of Fersen is held bj his connections, and his display to morrow will be awaited with keen in-

; Ihe remaining contestants, Davistock • and Tahurangi, may be depended on for useful efforts, with the last-men-tioned preferred. However, investors . are likely to consider the issue as being 1 between Fers-en and Cherry King, with - Bed Manfred also a nicely place-getter. The sprint even to-morrow is cerr tain to provide investors with a probe lem, for some good recent form has to - be taken into consideration. Diatos nious has certainly been given a great chance with 9.0 if he can produce his - best form, especially as it is under- ; stood that he will be ridden by J. Mc- - Gill, the apprentice who was on Chief - Lady last Saturday- The failures of Diatomous at Trentham somewhat I dimmed the brilliant displays for which

he was responsible at, the Ellerslie summer meeting. Mother Superior was well beaten at Wanganui, but may do better on the New Plymouth track, while Copyist will be remembered for several smart sprint successes in the best company. Eady Kyra has done remarkably well in good company this season, and she and Limulus may be expected to carry the bulk of the investments. The latter won the Wellington Stakes in taking style and should hold her own in open company. Burnish is another three-year-old who will have friends, while Bodyline and Moatoa should also be in request. Perhaps the public will declare for Lady Kyra, Limulus and Burnish. R. Reed will ride Hazoor in the Taranaki Cup, and he will also be on Golden Wings, Ringside, Brown Betty, Hunt the, Slipper and Red Rufus. B. H. Morris will ride Cherry King in the Cup and Mother Superior in the sprint. After her Wanganui showing there is a chance Mother Superior may not make the trip. L. G. Morris has been engaged for Pladie.
