SWIMMING
WANGANUI CENTRAL CLUB FIRST CARNIVAL OF SEASON. ATTRACTIONS FOR TO-NIGHT. The Wanganui Central Swimming Club is holding its carnival this evening at the St. George’s Gate Bath. Record entries have been received and over 150 swimmers will be taking part, inclusive of relay races. A feature of the programme will be the races for the inter-club trophies at present held by the Wanganui Central Club. In the Thomas relay, for teams of four men, each to swim 25yds., teams from Marton. Gonville and Wanganui East will be competing, while for the Tingey Cup, flying scpiadron. teams of 10 men aside, 50yds. each, Gonville and Wanganui East will be the challengers. The Bonner Cup, for ladies’ teams of six aside, will be competed for by Gonville and Central (holders). These events should be well worth seeing, and patrons are assured of some thrilling finishes. The men’s 100yds. invitation race should prove an added attraction, as the Wanganui district championships are to be held this month, and this should give the public some idea of the likely champion. 1 There are six heats, with six swimmers in each, for the men’s 50yds. event. This race has always provided plenty of thrills, and some great racing should be witnessed. Good entries have been received for the 75yds. ladies, 100yds. intermediate boys, 100yds. open breaststroke, besides the events for junior sections under 14 and under 12. In the diving section excellent en tries have been received and judging by the competitors taking part the ex hi bition should be of the highest stand ard.
The first game in the second round of the Wanganui district championship polo competition will be staged, between Wanganui East and Central Although Central have proved the leaders for the first round, Wanganui East are a greatly-improved team and should give Central a hard game ou this occasion. The B grade game between Gonville and Central should prove an excellent display. Gonville have proved the victors on more occasions than Central but nevertheless Central B are out tc avenge their defeat if possible. An ex cellcii. All who are interested in swimming would be well advised to attend this swimming carnival, as there will bt plenty of thrilling races and good div ing besides the polo, which will pro vide plenty of thrills. Swimmers are reminded that the en tries for the bridge-to-bridge race close at the Central Chib’s carniva’ this evening. Each swimmer must b< accompanied by a boat and the nomi nation fee is Is. Arrangements have been made with the Aramoho ant Union Boating Club for dressing ac commodation for swimmers.
