PLANS ALMOST COMPLETE NOVEL EVENTS IN THE MAKING SPEUTAVULAR LIGHTING A meeting of the Wanganui Carnival executive was held last night. Mr. C. G. Russell, chairman, presided. Comprehensive reports were made by the various officers in charge of sections of the programme, and they indicated that organisation is well forward. The carnival is to date from February 23 to March 3, and will include many attractions of a new and novel kind. Draught Horse Derby Noiilicalion was received that, eight horses had been entered from Waxerley in the Draught. Horse Derby and special arrangements will be gone to

to ensure that this will be a properly run race. The Carnival Gold Cup will b\* competed for and the Waverley district, by sending eight entries, will make a strong bid to take the emblem of championship north. Messrs. J. BDavis, F. Searle and the secretary (Air. C. S. Swan) have this event in train and are open to receive entries. High Jinks Fair Reporting on behalf of the High Jinks Committee, Air. H. Keesing stated that many new features had been arranged lor this year. “Over the Falls,” direct from \¥-embley, would be shown for the first time iu New Zealand. ‘‘The Four Daredevils’’ had been engaged and would display their revolving trapeze act. That and thv performing seals would appear for the first time in Wanganui. A scenic railway is to be included iu the list of attractions. This is a very elaborate concern requiring a great deal of space. Its construction includes tunnels, viaducts, bridges, stations and all appliances used by an up-to-date railway service- The merry-go-round to be utilised this year is of an entirely new type, which would , make wider appeol than any so far manipulated in Wanganui. Each night there is to be some special feature

staged on the racecourse. The I’utiki and Ratana Alaoris are co-operating and will be included on a. detailed programane of exceptional merit. The Opening Tableau Air. Eric Lind submitted a written report of the organisation with regard lu the opening tableau, which is to tak-u place on Uuok’s Gardens on Monday night, February 25. This will be the great ex ent of carnival week and will introduce to the populace a new, lair princess. A procession is to leave the Drill Hall and will include the Princess iu a specially decorated car, featuring a swan and a unique floral design. The .Regimental Band ig to head the parade, and the Ratana Band and I’utiki Warriors and the various firms’ choral entries will be featured. After presentation of the various addresses of xvelcome to the Princess, and demonstrations of loyalty from the natives assembled, the choral competition will be decided. There me already a number of entries for this popular event, and the choirs are practising. Entries close to-morrow. Following the choral effort, will be a huge fireworks display. Later, the Princess and uer escorting procession will move off from the grounds, headed by the bands and followed by loya?l subjects. The fireworks to be displayed will be the brightest ex er fired in Wanganui. An effort is io be ma h* to induce the Aero Club to co-operate. Street Decorations Mr. .1. Williams reported that, the work of organising street decorations was well forward and that, the commil tee was fotunatv ie. having the cooperation of the business people the Power Board and ('ity Council. Something of even greater effect than that of last year would result.
