THE MASPORT CUP
MISS WANGANUI SECOND MARLBOROUGH RETAINS TROPHY PICTON, Jan. 22. The New Zealand power boat championship was raced in Picton Harbour this afternoon in brilliant weather and good water conditions. Marlborough retained the title for the Masport Cup, Pelorus Jack, Senior, owned by Mr. J. M. Brownlee, Havelock, winning handsomely after a splendid contest. Freeman’s “Miss Wanganui” filled second place, while the 1934 Cup winner, J. H. Perano’s Tory Chick, of Picton, was third. L, W. Algie and J. Pantel’s “Miss Syndicate,” from Dunedin, filled fourth place. Lucas Bros.’ and J. Morgan’s “Miss VB,” from Blenheim, was the only other starter, “Miss Ethel” (Wanganui) and “Rio Rita III.” (Christchurch) scratchingThe race, which carried a £2O purse besides the cup, was run over five laps of the course of 3i nautical miles. The winner’s time was 16min. 35 2-ssec., the second boat taking 17min. 4 3-ssec. Pelorus Jack was the first away and was never headed. Tory Chick was in a good position in the second place till the last lap when Miss Wanganui came from fourth up to second with a great burst of speed.
