PATIENCE OF SETTLER
THIRTY YEARS IN THE MUD REQUEST FOR METAL ROAD Sympathetic consideration of a request for metalled access by a settler who had been on the mud road for 30 years was given by the Ohura County Council at its last meeting. Mr George Woods waited on the council to ask that an endeavour be made to have the Waikaka Road metalled. He said that he had lived on his section for 30 years without metalled access and had paid a very considerable sum in rates. He was still miles off the metal and even that morning he had almost to put on gum boots in order to get out of his property. The total length to •complete metalling as far as the bridge over the Mangakahikatea stream was 3J miles, he said. The chairman, Mr .1. Caird, said the council regarded the road as very important and had placed it second on the list of urgency. He pointed out that there was a grant of £l2OO available lor constructing a bridge over the Waikaka stream at the Whenuakura Road, which he did not consider was nearly as necessary. Mr Woods.’ request was viewed sympathetically by the council.
