REGENT THEATRE
“MANY HAPPY RETURNS.” “Many Happy Returns,” the first motion picture to feature Guy Lombardo and his Royal Canadians, who are enjoying the privilege of being ranked as America’s leading jazz combination, ■ commences to-day at the Regent Theatre and will be found an exciting entertaining comedy-farce, made hysterically funny by the antics of George Burns and Gracie Allen. A Paramount production, the picture presents a potpourri of maniacal comedy centring about the crazy Burns and Allen, delightful music by Lombardo’s orchestra, and a satisfying romance enacted by Joan Marsh and Ray Milland. Directed by Norman McLeod, this film achieves great moments as a mad, glad comedy, with most of the funny business centring about the dizzy personality of Aliss Allen. Presented as a love-sick girl, enamored of Radio Announcer George Burns, she wrecks her father’s department store business through insane mismanagement, and is accepted by her radio idol only when he is offered thirty dollars a mile for every mile he takes her from home. The comedy speeds to Hollywood, revealing an intimate picture of film operations with the lentire ensemble embroiled in a hectic, pursuit of fame and love. Lombardo, in his initial screen work, shows himself an expert showman as well as orchestra leader. He introduces several striking new song numbers and orchestrations. Veloz and Yolanda, celebrated dance team, have a featured spot in the
film and carry away their portion of the Entertainment with flying colours. The revue “Dancing Days” is to be staged at the matinee only, when the following pupils of Aliss Shirley Cramond will be seen in fancy and operatic dances: —Playtime in Holland, Ballet, juniors; solo. Pat Healey, duo, Joan Peters and Sylvia Moore; operatic, Yvette Cramond; “Aliss Vanity,” Thelma Dandy; Regent Routine, Seniors; Valve Caprice, Joan Peters; The Tapping Two, June Healey and Thelma Dandy; Nymph, Ruth Healey; Skipping Dance, Sylvia Moore; Les Reves des Statues.
