AT THE DUCHESS
CURRENT ATTRACTIONS. “BERKELEY SQUARE” TO-NIGHT. Peter Standish once again mingles with his ancestors in “Berkeley Square,” 'which came to the screen of the Duchess Theatre last night and will be screened finally to-night. Jesse L. Lasky should be commended for the sound judgment he manifested in obtaining the services of Leslie Howard for the role. It is one of the most completely charming films to have come from Hollywood. It is a splendid photoplay, filled with the humour and the gentle pathos that should appeal to all. If you enjoy a performance that is finished and perfectly handled, do not fail to see Leslie Howard’s portrayal of Peter Standish in “Berkeley Square.” Heather Angel plays the leading feminine role opposite Howard. Pretty, tender and appealing, Miss Angel’s performance is superb. Coming next Wednesday to the Duchess Theatre, Cicely Courtneidge is responsible for a whirlwind of fun in England’s great picture of music, spectacle and comedy, “Aunt Sally.” England’s supreme comedienne provides laugh-a-second comedy and she is ably supported by a cast of stellar names ensuring entertainment every moment. To be screen. at the Duchesfl next Friday and Saturday, “The Silence of Dean Maitland,” produced by Cinesound Productions, Ltd., featuring a cast of international stars, is more than a motion picture; it is a national achievement of which Australia can justly be proud. As a stage play “The Dean” enjoyed a long and successful life, and ’in the days before the screen began to talk, a “silent” film version was popularly presented throughout the length and breadth of the Commonwealth. But in the new Cinesound presentation, completely revised and adapted for the modern screen, “The Dean,” as Smith’s Weekly, Sydney, says, “has improved beyond recognition.”
