MOTOR-CAR IMPORTS

ADVANCE OVER LAST YEAR. NINE: MONTHS’ FIGUKI’X 'file number of motor vehicles imported into New Zealand in the first nine months of this year was 8762, nearly four times the figure of 2250 for the corresponding period last year. Up to September, .1932, the total number of vehicles imported was 2328, and in the same period of the previous year the total was 3109. Vehicles imported in the first nine months this year were valued at £.1,080,888 for purposes of assessing duty, compared with £319,653 in the corresponding period last year, £337,774 between January and September in 1932, and £456,156 in the first threequarters of 1931. The figures quoted arc the current domestic values in the countries of origin, plus 10 per cent. The United Kingdom accounted for 3311 cars and chassis, valued at £455,029, out of the total imported of 6836 set down at £836.764. The United States total was 2487, valued at £242,688, while there were 1038 from Canada worth £139,047. In the first three-quarters of 1933, the United Kingdom sent 1566 cars and chassis, worth £209,611. and the United States 43 at £5650, while there were 120 from Canada, representing an expenditure of £18.423. Following are the number of cars and car chassis imported in the first nine months of each year:—

A total of 28 lorries, trucks, vans i and ’buses, valued at £2983, was ini- < ported, and of this number live were from the United Kingdom, valued at £530. one valued at £lB5 from the United States, and 22. valued at £2268, from Canada. Chassis for lorries and trucks landed in New Zealand totalled 1898, valued at £241.441. Of these 742 came from the United Kingdom, valued at £131,699; 879 from the United States, valued at £81,995; and 277 from Canada, valued nt £27,747. Details of the trucks and commercial chassis imported during the first threequarters of the past three years arc as follow: —
