MANAWATU SHOW

OPENING TO-MORROW There is every indication that in every department the Metropolitan Show this year will eclipse all previous shows held in Palmerston North and a new standard will bo set for New Zealand’s metropolitan agricultural shows. The first essential factor in any agricultural show is good competition in the competitive classes for livestock for it is in this department that an agricultural show fulfils its primary duty and function. An agricultural show is the meeting ground for all that is best in livestock and produce. In almost every section this year there is a marked increase in entries. Particularly is this noticeable in the sheep and dairy cattle sections. The total entry in the sheep section is 594, the Romney Marsh breed being responsible for 150 entries, the Southdown breed 193, the Ryeland breed 36 and the magnificent entry of 102 pens of fat lambs, speaks very forcibly of the tremendous fat lamb business conducted in the Manawatu ami neighbouring districts. The sheep pavilions, probably the finest in New Zealand, are not big enough to house the complete entry of sheep on this oc casion. The interest in horse competitions is stronger this year than ever. Many of the leading horses in the North Island will be competing. An innovation this year will be the competitions for judging of a jersey cow. a pig and a sheep by schoolboys. A splendid response has been received from schoolboys. At the Palmerston North Show on Friday at 10.30 o’clock a demonstration on the qualities of a Jersey cow will be given by the Jersey judge (Mr. A. C. Lovelock). the demonstration the president of the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association (Mr. ]). Collis) will present the prizes won in the Jersey cow judging competition by schoolboys attending primary or secondary schools.
