RANGITIKEI RACES

iPRING MEETING AT BULLS HANDICAP TO KOROKIO SANGUINE KING SCORES. (By “Kestrel.”) lu spite of several light showers during the atternoon the weather on Saturday did not deter racegoers from patronising the Kangitikei Kaeing Club’s spring meeting at Bulls, with the result that the nxture was satisfactorily disposed of, while some interesting racing was provided. The attendance was i eally good, considering the fact that rain was falling in several quarters in the morning and must nave caused many intending patrons to alter their minds. Under the circumstances it was distinctly creditable to liud the totalisator turnover for the seven races reaching a total of £4512, compared with i/4420 at the May meeting and £4365 10s at the February meeting. Well-backed winners caused *he majority of the dividends to be on the small size, the largest dividend being that associated Arena in the hack sprint, and even here it did not reach half the recognised “limit.” Two odds-on favourites were successful, and two more returned small dividends when they finished second, while in the opening race the winner was also favourite but at better than “evens.” The track was in excellent order and little affected by the rain. The meeting was run through with smooth precision, the schedule being closely adhered to. This must be accounted to the credit of the new secretary, Mr. E. V. Wilson, who had everything in readiness for the smooth despatch of the day’s business. The principal race, the Kangitikei Handicap, was won by the Wanganuitrained Korokio, who last Monday had led the field home in the Waverley Cup. The Redfern mare was capably handled by L. G. Morris, and was followed home by Plateau and Headmistress. Confidently supported, Sanguine King won the Clifton Handicap, defeating the hot favourite, .Royal Routine, with the other three starters beaten off. The Trial Stakes was won by the form horse. Jubilee Song, owned and trained at Foxton, which centre also provided the winner of the Sandon Hurdles in Manawatu. L. G. Morris, who trains Arena, piloted this rather disappointing daughter of Cockpit and Wiwini to victory in the Ohakea Hack Handicap, thus bringing about the downfall of a particularly hot favourite in Palm. The Bulls-traincd Argument won the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, with the Wanga-nui-owned Alcides returning an even better dividend for running second. A small field contested the concluding event, which provided the best totalisator pool of the day, and in an even betting race Hunting Lodge added to her consistent record by winning nicely from the outsider, Wasteland. Favourite Wins the First. Jubilee Song was favourite for the Trial Stakes aud duly won from Leith, who was at a good price. State Bank and Amante dwelt when the tapes went up and Dialogist, Saxon v and Jubilee Song showed out from Arouse. Golden Empire and Cloudy Bay. Saxony assumed the lead after going a couple of furlongs and piloted the field across the top, with Dialogist. Jubilee Song, Cloudy Bay. Arouse, Note Issue and Leith in close attendance. Leith got through on the rails when they straightened up and set off after Jubilee Song, who was first in line for the judge. The favourite came on to win nicely by three-quarters of a length from Leith, who had him extended at the finish. Dialogist was two lengths away, a head in front of Arouse, with Saxony, Evasion, State Bank and Sporting Song next to finish. Hurdles to Manawatu. Manawatu was at a shade of oddson for the Sandon Hurdles, and the public again proved right. Beau Star set out to make the pace and the field was soon strung out, Manawatu and Illawarra being eight lengths behind the leader passing the stands, with a gap back to Benedictine, Hard Gold and No Humbug. Half a mile from home Benedictine joined Beau Star, with Manawatu following the pair across the top, a couple of lengths away, and a gap of ten lengths to No Humbug. Thus they turned for home, with No Humbug rapidly making up her leeway and jumping the last fence not far behind the leading trio. Manawatu asserted his claim over the final furlong to win by a length from Benedictine, who was three lengths ahead of No Humbug. Beau Star was fourth and after a gap came Hard Gold. Illawarra fell at the last fence. Arena Scores Comfortably. Palm was backed down to a very short price for the Ohakea Hack Handicap, but Arena won comfortably at a good price. Land Tax, Arena, Midacre and Palm showed out first and ran in that order to the top, where Midacre was just behind Land Tax, with Palm and Arena clear of Dick Whittington, Lapel and Black Man. Thus they turned for home, the leaders being bunched at the distance, where Arena shot to the front, going away to win by three lengths from Palm, who was a neck in front of Black Man. Next to finish was Dick Whittington, followed by Lapel and Land Tax. Another for Korokio. Odds were laid on Korokio for the iangitikei Handicap ant the Wanga-a;ji-trained mare duly scored. inning past the stands and out of tne straight Prince Colossus was ahead of Headmistress, Plateau, Korokio, Spearform and Mercian Prince, and the order was much the same going down the back stretch. Prince Colossus turned into the straight just clear of Headmistress, Korokio and Beryl Latour, with Plateau making a forward move. The favourite was taken into the lead once they strightened up, and it was left to Plateau to chase Korokio home, a length behind. Headmistress nearly caught Plateau on the post, being only half a neck away, and then came Prines Colossus, True Shaft, and Spearform.

Distance Hack to Argument. Royal Record was better backed than Argument in the Rangitoto Hack Handicap, but it was Argument who eventually won from the comparatively neglected Alcides. Going out of the straight Ebeum, Argument, Royal Record, Round Score and Santoft were the leaders, and running into the back stretch Ebeum, Royal Record and Argument were ahead of Alcides, who had moved up on the outside, with Hunting Queen, Round Score, Tahurangi, Santoft and Bold Jim next in order. On the home turn Ebeum and Royal Record were joined by Alcides and Argument, with Tahurangi and Round score nearest of the others. Argument ‘asserted his claim at the distance and came on to win by a length and a-half from Alcides, who was half a length in front of Round Score. Ebeum was fourth and Royal Record, Hunting Queen and Hark Forrard were next to finish. Sanguine King All the Way. Royal Routine and Sanguine King carried most support in the Clifton Handicap and returned the dividends in the reverse order. The race is easily described for Sanguine King jumped out smartly and led Royal Routine, Good Hunting and Davistock along the back stretch and round the turn. Royal Routine challenged inside the distance but Sanguine King held on to win by a neck. Three lengths away was Good Hunting, with a gap back to the other pair. Last to Hunting Lodge. Only five were left to contest the concluding event, and in an even betting race Bodyline carried a little more than Courtega and Hunting Lodge, the eventual winner. Wasteland and Hunting Lodge moved out smartly from Courtega, but Arona soon ran up to the leaders and the order into the straight was Wasteland, Hunting Lodge and Courtega. I. an interesting set-to Hunting Lodge prevailed over Wasteland by a neck, with Courtega only a long head away, third, and Bodyline fourth. DETAILS OF RESULTS. TRIAL STAKES.
