FIRST TEST MATCH BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA. SINGLES AT KENSINGTON. Received Oct. 28. 7.5 p.m. MELBOURNE, Oct. 28. The first golf Test match ever played between Britain and Australia commenced on the Australian Golf Club’s course at Kensington to-day, four singles matches being played over 36 holes. Results were:— J. McLean (Britain) defeated J. Ferrier 5 and 4. L. Garnett (Britain) defeated Apperly 5 and 4. T. McKay defeated Michael Scott (Britain) 2 and 1. M. Ryan defeated T Bourn (Britain) one up. McLean played very steadily the morning round to lead two up. He was only three times off the fairway. He approached accurately and had a stroke round of 72. par being 71. Ferrier, on the other hand, was erratic. McLean was never off the line in the afternoon, winning easily. Garnett outdrove Apperly but was I less accurate with his irons. He led one up at lunch. Garnett played brilliantly in the afternoon, however, averaging fours when the match finished. Scott and McKay’s contest was marked by very bad golf, both being frequently in bunkers and they putted weakly. Bourn and Ryan had a great struggle. Bourn had a tendency to push out shots, but recovered well. Bourn looked like giving Britain a 3—l lead when Ryan holed out from the swamp to square the match at the 33rd and eventually win after Bourn’s drive at the last hole finished awkwardly behind. Three foursomes matches will be played on Monday.
