ROWING

WANGANUI SHED CLUB FOURS TROPHY. SEMI-FINALS REACHED. Four races were held by the Wanga nui Rowing Club during the week-end, when competition for the club fours’ trophy was commenced. A good standard of racing was seen. P. Marchant’s crew won from B. R. Durie’s by a canvas; A. Mitchell’s crew won from McCann’s crew b a length; and R. Edwards won fiviii N. Foster by two lengths. In a semi-final, Edwards also won from H. Robertshaw by a length and a-half. Edwards’ crew, which was selected after the other four had been drawn, is the most impressive crow ami may be regarded as the “favourites” for the final. Marchant's crew got away to a bet ter start than Durie’s, one of the men coming off his slide in the latter’s boat shortly after the start. With this handicap, Duric lost a length, and was that margin behind as the crews passed under the Dublin Street bridge. The gap was closed as the crews passed Guyton Street, and the boats were on level terms to the St. George’s Gate baths. In a sprint to the finish. Marchant came away to win by a canvas, the strong current on the inside probably being a determining factor, for Durie’s boat was well out in the stream. The crews were:—P. Marchant (str.), E Campbell (3), S. Hanton (2), Bourne (bow), and B. R. Duric (str.), L. McKinnon (3), K. Gibbons (2), Cooper (bow). In the second race, McCann’s crew secured a better start than their op ponents, and took the lead immediately, swinging together well. At the bridge they had a lead of nearly half a length. At the groyne, the other crew began to go up, an<f gradually secured the lead, which was increased to a length and a-half. Over the final stages McCann’s crew came up fast to reduce the margin to a length. ♦

The crews were:—A. Mitchell (str.) ( R. Rawle (3), K. Staton (2), W. Chir> tian (bow), and McCann (str.), C. W. McLean (3), S. Cass (2), and F | Campbell (bow). I Edwards took the lead from the start ' in his race with Foster, aud gradually i went ahead. Passing the groyne, be pvas a length to the good, and as the | boats approached the baths there was [clear water between them, Edwards | eventually winning by two lengths, eas- | ing up over the latter stage. When Efl wards and Robertshaw met, they had to row against tide and a slight wind. Edwards secured the faster start, and had a length to the good at the bridge. At, the groyne there was a length and a-half between I the boats, but at Guyton Street RobertI shaw pulled up slightly. Edwards, howj ever, went away again to win comfort’ably by a length and a half. The crews were:— Edwards, Clay, Graham, Northover. Foster, Byres, Stokes, Nelson. Robertshaw, Williams, Paul, L. Clapham. Marchant and Mitchell row the other semi final to morrow (Tuesday) evening. The final will take place on Wednesday. Jim Grubb and Don McNabb are the club’s coxswains. Both have steered two winning crews to date.
