DRIFTED OUT TO SEA
TWO MEN IN A BOAT [ Per Press Association ] WHAKATANE, Sept. 18. Two men had an extraordinary experience, being washed out to sea from the Tarawera River at midnight on Saturday in a nine-foot flat-bottomed boat. Having no oars and only a titree pole, they drifted helplessly about for eighteen hours in the calm sea. Messrs. Robert Lamb, aged 50, and Janies Holden, aged 21, both of Auckland, endeavoured to cross the river and were carried over the bar- They drifted seven miles to near Rurima Islands, then up the coast in the vicinity of Plate Island. Finally the tide again turned and carried them near the shore, and with the aid of a seat for a paddle they reached the beach fourteen miles from the starting point. The men, who were without food and water, were none the worse for their unenviable experience.
