PRESSURE ON CHINA
DEFECTION FROM LEAGUE. PROBLEM OF FAR EAST. LONDON, Sept. 6. M.uch pressure is being brought to bear upon China to leave the League of Nations and co-operate with Japan, under Japanese hegemony, the Geneva correspondent of the Times reports, ft is believed that a considerable body of Chinese opinion will prove susceptible to Japan’s influence. China’s defection, or even indifference, would greatly weaken the League's influence in the far East and the Pacific, whereas, if China remains in the League it will be strongly represented owing to Australia's presence on the Council and the possible adhesion of the Soviet. The Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. ‘ R. B. Bonnett, on disembarking at Cherbourg, said that, no reason existed ' why Canada should be gainst Russia’s entry into the League of Nations. China has lodged with the League’s Secretariat, a request that the Council seat now hold by China, the term of which expires this year, shall be reallotted to her for a further period. China, it. is claimed, has been, in the 1 face of formidable and ceaselessly augmenting political pressure, the chief ’ defender of the League of Nations ‘ Pact and of the whole idea of co-opera-i tion in the Far East between the Orient and the Occident.
