HOCKEY VISITORS
AUSTRALIANS’ TEAM DEFEAT OF HAWKE’S BAY ( Per Press Association ). HASTINGS, Sept. 13. Combination and fitness, especially the former, were responsible for the Australian hockey representatives defeating Hawke’s Bay here to-day by four goals to one in the presence of over 1000 people. The game was a particularly fast one throughout and always interesting. The first spell was unexpectedly very even, ’Bay more than holding their own and showing surprising defensive ability. The spell was scoreless. After the change-over ’Bay attacked strongly in the first fifteen minutes to open the scoring, Fitzmaurice finding the nets. From this stage on the Australians settled down to make effective use of their superior combination and team play. The scores were quickly evened by Penning, but it was some time before the home defence was again pierced. It was about ten minutes before time when the visitors scored three goals iu quick time, scored by Penman (two) and Milner, ’Bay tiring badly and feeling the effects of the early fast
