SPRING RACE MEETING

CROCKING ON THE LAWN. After the bleak and gusty weather of the last few days yesterday dawned bright and clear, but although there was brilliant sunshine, a very keen southerly wind felt on the racecourse made the weaning of wraps a necessity. The race meeting gave the first important opportunity to women to wear their new spring ensembles and latest style in millinery. It is evident that the fashion of two-piece ensembles with finger-tip length or three-quarter length coats has caught the fancy of Wanganui women. All were worn with attractive blouses, many being finished with a bow tie scarf and the colour emphasised by a hat in the same shade. With costumes and nats of toning colours, bright scarves were worn, a gay tartan brightening a dark suit, and the tartans appeared in hats and bags. Although several of the new large shallow crowned hats and saucer shapes were noticed, the sailor style and smaller shapes were popular. Shoes were also an attractive note and were in harmony with the ensemble. Gay posies of spring flowers were tucked into fur stoles, collars of fur coats and also worn with tweed coats and costumes, the effect being very pleasing. Blue in varying shades, the new greens and brawns were the choice of colours, with a sprinkling of red, tartan effect checks and tweeds. About an hour after the first race coats and fur wraps were donned. Mrs. N. G. Armstrong’s ' smart tailored costume was of flecked Orleans blue, with which she wore a black lisere straw hat with trimmed bandeau at the back, and brown musquash fur coat; Mrs. Eric Riddiford (Wellington), wore a beige frock under a handsome light fawn fur coat; and sailor hat of beige straw; Mrs. H. Princess who is to marry Priuce George, is the youngest of the three daughters of Prince Nicolas, a younger brother of the late King Constantine of Greece and uncle of the present ex-King George 11. lu spite of her title the princess is not Greek by descent. Her lineage on the parental side is that of the Royal House of Denmark, or, to be more exact, the House of Schleswig - Holstein - Sonderburg - Glucksburg. On the side of her mother, the former Grand Duchess Helene, she is a descendant of the Romanoffs, from whom came also her parental grandmother, the late Queen Olga of Greece. 1 The Greek Royal Family, which lost

its sovereignty - in the revolution of March, 1924, when a republic was proclaimed, is large in number and its ramifications are not very easy to trace. Its history has been unhappy, for of four kings which it provided for the throne of Greece two were assassinated and two were deposed. The first royal ruler of Greece after its separation from Turkey w r as Otho 1., a Bavarian prince. He was deposed in 1862, and the crown was offered, through the instrumentality of Britain, to Prince Christian William of Denmark, -who accepted it and assumed the title of George I. His long reign of 50 years ended when he was assassinated at Salonika in March, 1913, shortly before the close of the first Balkan War. His son, Constantine, who succeeded to the throne, is best remembered for the tortuous policy he pursued during the first three years of the Great War, partly, it was alleged, under the influence of his wife, the former Princess Sophia of Prussia and a sister of the Kaiser. In June, 1917, the Allies demanded his abdication, and he retired to Switzerland, accompanied by the Crown Prince George, and his second son, Alexander, became King. On Alexander’s death in 1920, his younger brother Paul refused the throne, and as tho result of a favourable plebiscite Constantine returned in face of the disfavour of Britain, France and Italy. As a sequel to the disastrous campaign against the Turks in Asia Minor, Constantine abdicated in September, 1922, and died at Palermo a few months later. His eldest son, George 11., became king. A republican uprising occurred in 1923, and after declining to abdicate the king was deposed in March, 1924. His reign had lasted only 18 months. Since then George 11. has lived chiefly at Bucharest, his wife being Princess "Elizabeth, daughter of Queen Marie of Rumania and sister of King Carol. However, he spends a good deal of time in England. He has no children. Prince and Princess Nicolas of Greece and their daughters are well known in London society. The Prince is an artist nf repute, and an exhibition of his paintings in London in 1931 was visited by King George and Queen Mary. As a yourg man. Prince Nicolas wrote plays of considerable merit, and in 1926 he published an autobiography, “Mv Fifty Years,” in which he defended King Constantine against the charge of pro-German sympathies and activities in the Great War.—(An Exchange). Much money is won and lost each week at cricket fights in China, fish fights in Siam, and viper fighte in Air geria.
