BOMB WRECKS BEDROOM
WOMEN’S LUCKY ESCAPE. ARREST OF TWO MEN. Mrs. Iris Cleaver, aged 21 years, and Miss Sheila Al ay Beard, aged 23 years, had remarkable escapes from death in Hobart recently when a bomb, consisting of gelignite and stones in a treacletin, was thrown through the window of a room in which they were sleeping in a double bed. The bomb exploded a few feet from the bed. The mattress was blown from the bed, and flying stones became embedded an the walls and woodwork of the room. Clothing which was lying about the room was torn to shreds, and some articles were ignited. The force of t'he explosion broke crockery in a room on the floor above, and a bed in the room was lifted from the floor. The fuse attached to the bomb was blown through the broken window, and it smashed a window in a neighbouring house more than 30ft. distant. The two young women were awakened by the sound of the breaking glass This was followed by two loud explosions. The women rushed out of the room, but as they went they were struck by pieces of flying metal, which necessitated their bedng treated at a hospital. Two men were arrested and charged with having attempted to murder the two women.
