TOWN BOARD ELECTIONS i It is very pleasing to note chat once again citizens of the district are taking ; some interest in local body affairs, in the fact that there have been seven nominees for live seats on the Town ] Board. Nomination* are not yet due to close and it is fully anticipated that there will be at leas three more candidates offering. The Town Board buildings are at the present moment being painted and one : or two minor structure alterations have been carried out and undoubtedly these public buildings now look much brighter than before. WAVERLEY SCHOOL . Before Mr. Marks, the late assistant 1 master of the Waverley School, departed to take up hi* new position at Umuniuri, the buys of the higher standards of the school, called on him to make a presentation in appreciation of his services to them as coach of the 1 football team. As yet, no teacher has • arrived to replace Air. Marks, but it ! is understood that an appointment will - be made for October J. The school reopened ou Monday with an attendance of 216 pupils. This is the highest attendance of the year. “LUCKY WEEK’’ Last week could rightly be described as Waverley’s lucky week. Firstly, a local lady was the fortunate holder of a ticket which rewarded her with a * £IUU prize in the last art union, and then at the combined hunt meeting held at New Plymouth, local horses had their full share of successes. Air. Brewer’s horse Kuafonn paid a sensa- : tional dividend for second place, Airs. B. Downes’ Gold Alission also winning Two horses bred by Air. W. H. Wat-’ kins, Flower Bag and Cardhu, finished first and second respectively in their race, and Air. D. R. Jackson Is The Ark gained a third place. To complete the week of local successes, it is confidently anticipated that the local Hunt Club will benefit considerably from the meeting held at New Plymouth. WAVERLEY SCHOOL COMMITTEE The monthly meeting of the School 1 Committee was held in the Town Board's rooms last evening. Present were Air. Boyne (chairman), Messrs. Wicks, Elmslie, Dalrymple, and the secretary, Air. N. Bromiley. Apologies ttere received from Air. Aiken and Kev. Gardiner. The headmaster, Air. Flaherty, was also present. Ihe minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. ' It was mo\ ed by Mr- Boyne and seconded by Air. Dalrymple that accounts amounting to £7 8s be passed ' for payment. Ihe secretary presented a financial statement showing a small surplus on the first six months of the year, and as there had been several large accounts paid which would be non recurring. the committee expressed its ' approval. A lengihy di.-cussion then took place ( as to the holding the school concert or devising some other means by which , funds could be raised to assist in the purchasing of school prizes ami the picnic fund. It wa finally decided that 1 the matter be left in the hands of the chairman who will discuss the matter with the headmaster and the teachers. Before the meeting closed, the chairman spoke in appreciation of the Edu- ' cation Board’s action in having the school painted and no doubt it will present a much brighter outward appearance than before.
