The expedition intends to make a sledge journey of 1009 miles or mote across an entirely unknown region in Graham Land, which is a dependency of the Falklands. The expedition is generally considered to be the most important British enterprise in the Antarctic since Shackleton’s ill-fated attempt to cross the Continent nearl; 20 years ago. The British Governm-er has made a grant to Air. Rymill £20,000 from the Research Development Fund for the Falkland Islands, and has ordered the Discovery 11. to help in establishing the expedition’s base. LURE OF THE SEA YOUNG WOMAN STOWAWAY. EVA TURNER’S MANY TRIPS. FINED FOR LATEST EXPLOIT. SYDNEY, Aug. 22. The lure of the sea has been responsible for the downfall of Eva Turner, the young woman who, m Alay last, stowed away on the Niagara from Sydney to Auckland, and was returned on the Alonowai Since then she has had many exploits as a stowaway on various vessels. As the result of her latest exploit she appeared at the Police Court in Sydney this week and was fined. When she asked for time to pay the line the magistrate refused. The woman was charged with having stowed away on the liner Drama, while that vessel was on a cruise to Port Moresby, New Guinea. She was found on board three hours after the vessel I had left Brisbane. In court she denied that she had avoided payment. She said simply that she did not have any money for the fare. She was under the impression that she might have been given a position on the ship, but her requests in that direction were not successful. It was shown by the prosecution that Turner had stowed away on various ships on several occasions. The first time was when she was found on the Drford, while it was travelling from Sydney to Melbourne. On that occasion no action was taken against her by the shipping company, and she was put ashore at Melbourne, This did not act as a warning to the girl for she was next found on the Orford in the course of a voyage between Adelaide and Fremantle. She was hailed before the Court and fined. Later she was found on another vessel coining from Fremantle to the Eastern States. Her other exploit was when <he travelled b.v the Niagara to Auck- j land. ] Female stowaways are rare, but Aus- J tralia has provided at least three in , recent jyears. It is said they are more j difficult to detect than men 1 —— - t
