The United Kingdom was again in 1933 the world’s largest imponer ol dairy produce and pig produce, according to the survey of the Imperial Economic Committee. Although the total value is less by £14,000,000 than in 1.932, the imports of butter were a record at 8,835,000 cwt., 80 per cent, of the world production, equivalent to 23 V lb a head, being absorbed by the United Kingdom in 1933, as against 60 per cent, in the three years 1928 to 1930 inclusive Cheese at 3,000,000 cwt. showed a slight increase over 1932. Egg consumption was 152 per head iu 1933, as compared with 150 iu 1932, but the consumption of home-produced eggs increased from 65 to 69 per centFollowing the quota regulations the imports of bacon at 9,000,000 cwt were 2,300,000 cwt. below 1932. Denmark was the largest supplier of butter, cgs, and bacon. Following the Ottawa Agreement a marked increase is shown in the pro portion from Empire sources. The Empire supplies 63 per cent, of the butter, a larger proportion thau ever pre viously, and 93 per cent, of the cheese, chiefly from New Zealand and Canada. Empire supplies of eggs were 33 per cent-, as against 30 per cent, in 1932. and bacon 8 per cent., the highest proportion recorded. THE OTTAWA AGREEMENT ITS RECEPTION IN INDIA. The Select Committee appointed by the Central Legislature to examine the working of the Ottawa Agreement, expressed tho opinion that, on the whole, the agreement mutually benefited the contracting parties, and the preferences given by India would not adversely affect tho Indian consumer or the Indian revenues.
