GONVILLE CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The annual general meeting of the Gonville Tennis Club was held in the club pavilion on the evening of Tuesday, August 28, Mr. G. Orr presiding over a good attendance of members. After adoption of the secretary’s report and the balance-sheet, the election of officers for the coming season was held and resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr. W. R. Brown; president, Mr. G. Orr; vice-presidents, Mrs. F. Stott, Miss M. K. Pawson, Messrs. K Michie, B. Hoar and J. p. Reynolds; club captain, Mr. G. Craig; vice-captain, Mr. N. Uuhen; treasurer, Miss B. Craig; assistant-treasurer, Miss G. Meuli; secretory, Mr. K. S (Davidson; auditor, Mr. 1. G. Rose; committee, Mrs. P. •Stott, Misses E. Fitzgerald and N. Brown, Messrs. J. P. Reynolds, V. 8. Latham and N a Cullen; delegates to Wanganui Lawn Tennis Association, Messrs. G. Orr and V. 8. Latham. The president moved, in pursuance of notice of motion given by him, that the subscription for men be reduced by os and that for ladies by 2s 6d. This motion was carried unanimously. The opening day function which, as usual, will take the form »of a progressive tournament, was fixed for Saturday, September 22. The presentation of club, trophies won during the last season wil Hake place on the Saturday following opening day. ST JOHN’S CLUB THE OPENING DAY. 1934-35 SEASON BEGULN. The sudden clearing away of the rain and the arrival of warm sunshine at 2 o’clock on Saturday permitted St. John's Lawn Tennis Club to put into process the programme for the official opening of the courts for the season 1934-35. There was a good attendance of club members and friends. Mr. John Coull, patron of the club, presented the 1933-34 season’s trophies to the respective winners and he con- ■ gratulatcd the club upon the excellent performances of its members locally and in Palmerston North in inter-club and interprovincial tennis. Mr. Coull congratulated the ladies’ committee upon the splendid manner in which the club’s pavilion had been decorated for the occasion and also the men’s committee upon the fine appearance of the courts. The speaker went on to say that he would like to see the younger players encouraged and assisted in improving their games as they were the seasoned players of the future. Tennis occupied a foremost position among outdoor re creation and everything possible should be done in order to assist its development, mainly because of its physical and mental values to the general health of tho race. Continuing, Mr. Coull said that from a national viewpoint tennis had lately become of greater general interest in the fact that Mr. Perry and Miss Round, who have become virtual world champions in their respective grades, were British subjects. Mr. Coull then declared the courts open and the Yankee tournament was commenced. Mr. Nobel Campbell and Mr. L. Smaller had each presented a cup for the winning lady ami gentleman and these were won by Miss I. Glover and Mr. Cameron. In the evening a dance was held in the Victoria Hall, and a good orchestra, a splendid floor and an excellent supper made the function an outstanding success. It fittingly closed the first day of what promises to be a happy and successful year for the club.
