GENEROUS BEQUESTS
WILL OF LATE DR. COLLINS MANY CHARITIES BENEFIT INTEREST IN THE RED CROSS [ Per Press Association. I WELLINGTON, Aug. 31. A number of generous charitable and public gifts are provided for in the will of the late Dr. \V. E. Collins, C.M.G., M.L.C., of WKington, who died on August 11. The will provides for the following charitable and public gifts:— Subject to a prior life interest: (a) £250 to the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association at Wellington, as a contribution to it* New Zealand Medical Benevolent Fund. (b) £250 to the Otago University for the Medical School. (c) £5OO to the Victoria University College. Wellington, to be invested and the net annual income appropriated ea«ch rear for the encouragement of English literature. (d) £5OO to Victoria University College, Wellington, to be invested and the net income appropriated each vear fnr the encouragement, of loyalty to the Sovereign and patriotism. The residential nursery at Owen Street, Wellington, is forgiven £lOO of the sum owing bv it to the testator. Subject to a prior life interest some of the valuable works of art, china and pictures are given to the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts at Wellington, upon certain conditions for transfer subsequently to the National Art Gallery and the Dominion Museum St. Paul's Pro-Cathedral also benefits under the will. For many years Dr. Collins took a keen interest, in the New Zealand Red Cross Society, in whi’-h he had held an executive position. In 1931 he deposited with the Public Trustee the sum of £7OOO to be held upon the following trusts: (a) income from £5OOO and sums added to it (less portion of the income to be accumulated for a defined period} to be applied in the interests of the Junior Red Cross of New Zealand, including publication of the Junior Red Cross Journal; (b) the income from £lOOO, and sums added to it (less portion of the income to be accumulated fur a Refined period), to be applied by the Executive Committee of the National Red Cross Society of New Zealand in providing for the immediate relief of persons in New Zealand suffering from the consequence of the disaster or calamity due to earthquake, flood or other forces of nature; (c) income from £lOOO, and .sums added to it (less portion of income to be accumulated for a defined period), to be applied by the executive committee nf the National Red Cross Society of New Zealand in the interests nf the society. The second of these benefactions was made public in the lifetime of Dr. Collins. At his express request the remaining two were not disclosed in bis lifetime, he being averse to publicity being given tn them.
