MEN OF VERSATILITY OTTAWA, Aug. 13. The variety of the duties and re- ’ sponsibilitieo which fall upon members of the famous Royal Canadian Mounted Police is a point in the annual report of the Commissioner, Major-General J. H. Macßrien, to Parliament. The honours in this respect are held ; by Superintendent T. B. Caulkin, com- i manding at Dawson, in Yukon Territory, whose offices and appointments, in addition to his police duties, are listed as follows: Immigration Inspector, Inspector of Fisheries, Inspector of Weights and Measures, Sherriff of the Yukon, Registrar of Vital Statistics, Justice of the Peace, Coroner, Commissioner for Performing Marriages, Clerk of the Court and Acting Superintendent of Indian Affairs. The force consists of 88 officers, 2072 non-cojnniissioned officers and constables, 137 special constables and 207 members of the Marine section, a grand total of 2504 all ranks. 1110 Marine section is engaged in the prevention of smuggling and enforcement of the Excise Act. In most of the provinces the R. C. M. I’. by arrangement carries on the functions of provincial police, and in the vast unorgan ised territory of the North little de-' tachments of the “Mounties” represent law and order and the authority of the Canadian Government.
