HITHER AND THITHER

Harrier Club Damce The Wanganui Harrier Club will hold another dance on Saturday evening in the Victoria Hall, when the programme of dances will include two Monte Carlos. There will be confetti, balloons and a sit-down supper. The Arcadians' Orchestra will supply the music. Afternoon Party To aid the funds of the Technical College Girl Guide Company, Mrs. 1. E. Newton gave a musical afternoon on Tuesday at her home in St. Leonard’s St., St. John’s Hill. Those contributing to the enjoyable programme were Mrs. R. A. Howie, Misses J. Harman, Hausen and Humphreys, who sang, Mrs. T. L. Sperring, musical monologues. A cake competition was won by Mm. G. Wall.

Pianos in Demand Again A musical friend handed me an overseas paper this week and, pointing to a marked paragraph, said, ‘ ‘ Read that." The paragraph referred to the piano trade which, according to the report, was experiencing a slight boom. It stated that notwithstanding such counter-attractions as the gramophone and the wireless, there were now distinct signs of renewed popular interest in pianos. The opinion was expressed that this is mainly attributable to wireless and gramophones giving lots more people an interest in music and a desire to be able to provide their own. Children are being taught the piano again. Another marked symptom is tne engagement of players for orchestras, which are making their appearance for a short period during the theatre programmes. Another significant fact is noticeable in the "wanted" columns of the papers from countries overseas, in which are seen such advertisements as "Wanted to Buy piano in good condition,’’ or “Buyer willing to purchase for cash, piano suitable for children to practice on." For some years there had been a sad lack of these kind of announcements in newspapers.
