BEAUTIFYING WANGANUI

SOCIETY ACHIEVES RESULTS OFFERS OF ASSISTANCE. Good progress with the programme of beautifying various parts of thp ’city has been made by the Wanganui Beautifying Society, and at the monthly meeting yesterday it was stated that many offers of assistance had been forthcoming. The secretary, Mr J. Wiiiianis, reported that Mr O. Allen had offered to lend his truck for the society’s use. and to buy trees and keep them in order in Central Avenue if the society , would plant them. An offnr of assistance had also been made by Merewether Motor Co., Ltd. Mr L. F. Row, engineer to the Wanganui City Council, reported that the work of erecting a fence at Gordon Park, to divide the bush from a paddock, was practically completed. It was reported that Mr L. V. Kerby had suggested that the river bank from the vicinity of Carlton Avenue to Bodford Avenue could be beautified with good results. Dr. E. E. Porritt ’tafed that he had visited the locality with Mr Kerby, and there was every reason that another Kowhai Park could be formed there. It was a very popular place in the summer. Dr. Porritt and Mr Row are to make a further report. It was also stated bv Mr Hope Gibbons, the president that trees were to be planted at th? mission property at Putiki nt the city’s southern entrance and round the fences at the stock paddo’tk at Durievalo. A further inspection of the area between the Wanganui Rowing Club shed and the town bridge is to be made by Messrs Gibbons, flow and Rhodes. The work of planting carried out at Upper A ram oho bv Mr T. Dix, engineer to the Waitotara County Council. ( was eulogised by Messrs. Gibbons and Dawson. They said that trees had been planted in the various streets and for some two miles along the river hank. “When they grow up the place will he a veritable beauty snot,’’ said Mr Gibbons. “Mr Dix has done more than we expected could have been effected and the result is splendid."
