SMITH'S RECORD YEAR i TROTTING SPORT HONOURS Although there is one more trotting . meeting to be held in the South Island and a few events at racing meetings, the position held by the 'I akanini , trainer and reinsman F. J. Smith, with 51 wins in e:rch department, is un- . assailable and for the second term in succession the ex-British trainer will head the list of winning trainers and drivers in Now Zealand (writes , “Abaydos”). Smith’s figures ibis season are well , in advance of the previous best. Last season he drove 37 winners, which was a record, but C. S. Donald iu 1929-30 trained 45 winners, which was the best training performance until Smith’s phenon '‘iial achievement this term. A strikin. feature is that all the success were g.lined in the North Island, 37 of them in the Auckland Province. Seventeen horses from the stable participated in the 51 victories, as follows: —Worthy Light 10, Chancellor 6, Donum 5, Pegaway, Kewpic s King, and Anita Fame 4 each, Nell A 010 and Lisiea 3 each, Weo Machine, Kuiui, and Rustle. 2 each, and Worthy Chief, Rare Rev, Le Chenault, Wrecker, Kewpie’s Guy, and Ganton 1 each. With rhe exception of Worths' Light on one occasion, Smith drove all his horses to victory, and at Thames he won a race with Bingen Chief. He was in a place 36 times during the season, with 20 seconds and 16 thirds. Exclusive of two cups won by Worthy Light and one by Wee Machine, horses from the stable won. £6400 in stakes, the chief contributors being Worthy Light £1275. Chancellor £BlO. Pegeway £730. and Nell Volo £7OO. Smith, who ‘came to New Zealand at the beginning of the 1929-30 season, has now driven 130 winners.
