READING FOR AU

N.Z. RAILWAYS MAGAZINE, A big feature in the July issue of New Zealand Railways Magazine is the full text of a very bright address given recently by His Excellency the Gover-nor-General, Lord Bledisloc, at a luncheon of the Auckland Travel Club. With a full knowledge of the Dominion the speaker thoroughly introduces .-■enic New Zealand to those inhabitants who have not seen many of the i. arvels of their own country. Air. Ken Alexander’s subject this month is “The I’.ig Blow and the Distant Drum,” in hii-li he gives full play to his philosophic drollery, delightfully illustrated y himself* The famous Ne -r ” Zealander '■leeted by Mr. James Cowan for v orthv treatment is the brilliant Wilam Pember Reeves, who did enduring s i vice for his country here as well as : t London. Air. C. A. L. Treadwell tarns the clock back to 1869, when Alaniiora Pere was charged with high treason—in that he waged war against Queen Victoria—and was convicted and executed. The thrill of the story is intensified by the clever lustrations of Air. AL Matthews. In “New Zealand Songs,” Aliss Eileen Duggan, one of the Dominion’s most charming writers, gives her selections of this country’s most appealing poetry. “Helen,” in the “Women’s Section,” gives another very helpful budget of notes and comments on matters of dress, health and the home. The railway section, which is interesting to the general public,'■•inAudes a special feature, “Locomotive Development in New Zealand.” excellently illustrated by Air. Alarryat Jenkins. Other good reading will be found in “A Literary Page or Two” (notes on books and writers), “The Wisdom of the Maori,” “Pictures of New Zealand Life,” and original New Zealand verse.
