JAPANESE PREMIER
STARTLING SELECTION ADMIRAL OKADA APPOINTED MODERATE POLICY ASSURED (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright, Received July 4, 7.55 p.m. KOBE, July 4. Prince Saionji visited the Palace this morning and unexpectedly recommended Admiral Okada, who resigned from the Naval Ministry when Premier Inukai was assassinated. Admiral Okada’s selection for the Premiership is regarded as startling, the "chief effect being to postpone the return of partv government. Admiral Okada has many statesmanlike qualities, and is eminently moderate and well-balanced. It is also significant that he supported the London naval treaty, whose ratification by Japan he enabled by effecting a compromise between the Hainagichi Cabinet which signed the pact, and the navy general staff, which bitterly opposed it, resulting in the resignation of Admiral Katu, then Chief-of-Staff. Therefore, the placing of such a prominent naw man in the Premiership assures that the navy’s voice will be fully heard in the final settlement at the Naval Conference of 1935. Prince Saionji’s supreme influence for moderation is again exemplified by his selection.
