GERMAN COLONIES
Sir, —“Honi Soit, qui maly, peuse’ is applicable in a marked degree t< your correspondent ‘‘A.J.P.,” in you: issue of June 29, whon he refers to tin Germans as arch criminals, and stig gests that they shall still be deprive; of their colonies which constitutes the life blood of their existence. On the other hand, “Bishop Barns’ (who is th-e first man since the fright ful World War to step out of tht ranks), has displayed more humanity and justice than any other unit of the British Empire. One of the main planks for peace anc prosperity is the restoration of the Ger man colonies, followed by tlfe full pay meat of the debt to America and the absolute conquest of the Aleat Trust which is a hundred per cent, greate: enemy than ever Germany was. Having lived in Australia for ovei a quarter of a century, the writer is in a position to prove that the Germans developed the Commonwealth tc a greater extent than any other nation, and it is simply hideous to think that England should have taken part in the wholesale slaughter of her own flesh and blood, when in the first place, owing to the lethargic state of the British Administration, it was proposed to give away territory, possibly to France (notably “Herrmaunsburg,” where a German colony has been established for nearly a century, identical with a portion that Dr. Gilruth unreservedly condemns in Northern Australia), unfortunately the fact remains that up to the period indicated above the English and Germans were one happy family. It is not far to seek that Germany up to .1913 was a potential wheel in the machinery of world trad-e, and since the component part has not been functioning a visitation has been apparent which has been wrongly termed a depression.—I am. etc., JOSEPH CARWARDINE.
