Pleasing Appointments, * I “The appointments at Spriggens Park are not equalled anywhere in New Zealand,” said several of the North. Island players who participated in yesterday’s trial match. Technical College Beaten. The Wanganui Technical College travelled to Wellington yesterday to play their annual match with the Wellington Technical College. The visitors were beaten by 14 to 6, Wellington producing the better team. The weather conditions were reported to have been unpleasant. i City Assessor Appointed. jY poll was taken at the City Council Chambers last night to decide the appointment of a representative of the city on the Assessment Court. Mr. Imlay Saunders secured 112 votes to 78, ; which were polled for Mr. A. L. Lon- | don. Mr. Saunders, accordingly, takes : his seat as a member of the Court for 1 a further term. Manawatu Gorge Road Open. Inquiries having been made by many motorists as to the state of the main highways south of Wanganui after the snowstorm of Tuesday night, the secretary of the Wanganui Automobile Association has obtained the information that the Manawatu Gorge and FoxtonLevin roads arc open for all traffic. Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs

It is expected that an enthusiastic meeting will take place to-morrow week (July 13), when the annual meeting of the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs in the Wanganui-Main Trunk district will be hold hi the Farmers’ Union Office in Ridgway Street. In addition to members of the clubs, representatives from local bodies and dairy companies will be present. Mayor’s Belief Fund. A canvass for clothing, especially men’s clothes, will be made at an early date by the Aramoho Relief Committee. The area covered will be between Halswell Street and Upper Arainolio. It is hoped that a quantity of clothing and other articles which may prove useful for the relief of distress will be forthcoming. This canvass will be the only drive made during the current season. Roads Unpassable. Advice was received by the Wanganui Automobile Association yesterday that all roads between National Park and Taumaruuui, Raetihi, Taihape, the Chateau, and Turangi are blocked, also the road between Raetihi and Taihape. The Wanganui-Taihapo road was blocked, but is now open; also the Wanganui-Raetihi road. There is four feet of snow in National Park and 11 inches fell in Taihape on Tuesday night. Unexpected Weather. After the very wild weather experienced on Tuesday night, very few people imagined that yesterday’s All Black trial match would be played under favourable conditions. But the weather has had a happy knack of favouring Wanganui football recently, and it was true to its colours on this occasion. The wind of the motning died down and although there was a cold nip in the air the afternoon was much more pleasant than was expected. Serious Charges. Pleading guilty at the Magistrate’s Court, Ohakune, on Tuesday, before Messrs. Larkin and Nation, J.’sP., Arthur Edward Davis, Stanley Wilson Davis, and Albert Joffre Davis, three brothers, were committed to the Supreme Court at Wellington for sentence on charges of incest. James Reginald Petersen, on two charges of unlawful carnal knowledge, pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Wanganui Supreme Court for trial on August 6. Programme of Music. The Wanganui Garrison Band provided a pleasing programme of music to entertain the crowd at yesterday's Rugby trial match at Spriggens Park. When the teams took the field the tunc was “On the Ball.” When arrangements for the match were being made it was realised that it would be difficult to obtain a band on a day in the middle of the week, but the Garrison was abl-e to supply what was wanted and the effort was much appreciated by the 5000 people present. Good Ski-ing Conditions. “la mdclighted to inform you that at the present moment ski-ing conditions are ideal, both at the Chateau and Scoria Flat,” writes Mr. R. Cobbe, to Mr. Stan Rennie, secretary to the Wan-ganui-Ruapehu Ski Club. “The ski jump at the Salt Memorial Hut is sufficiently covered to permit of jumping contests and very few rocks are showing. We have had a most difficult and strenuous week-end and skis had to be used to reach the bridge on the Bruce Road near the Haunted Whare (below the Chateau about miles). If warm rains do not fall ski-ing will be available- at the Chateau itself for a week longer. ’ ’ Well-Handled Crowd. The Wanganui and Metropolitan Rugby Unions have made a careful study of handling big crowds at Spriggens Park and on the occasion of the North Island trial match there yesterday the organisation functioned smoothly. While the crowd was not as large as that present on Juno 4 last (King's Birthday), when Wanganui and Taranaki met in their annual encounter, it was well looked after. The ground itself was in splendid order, except for one small “turnip patch” in front of the stand. Lt was encouraging to see the large parade of primary school childwn who turned out 1o see the North Island talent in action. The takings at the match totalled to over £4OO.
