MANTLE OF SNOW

HEAVY IN THE SOUTH WORST FOR MANY YEARS I Pei Press Association. I CHRISTCHURCH, July 3. The worst snowstorm Kaikoura has had for more than 50 years was experienced this morning. It severed telegraph communications with Christchurch, and between Christchurch and Wellington. Repair gangs were busy all day but it will probably be several days before normal working is restored. Snow on parts of the country lay to a depth of two feet, but this heavy fall was inland. In Kaikoura there was four inches of snow. No news has yet been received of losses of stock ON THE RIMUTAKAS [ Per Press Association i MASTERTON, July 3. I A heavy fall of snow on the Rimutakas late this afternoon held up motor traffic, and it was only with the greatest difficulty that a service car from Wellington got through, and then only by the use of •chains and much shovelling of snow on the part of the passengers and others. The car became stuck at a part known as “Windy Corner,” a quarter of a mile on the Wellington side of the Summit, where I fully twelve inches of snow is reported. Several other cars and lorries were also held up and the prospect of getting through to-night seemed remote, as it was still heavily.
